         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>Causes<br></em></strong>When a baby is shaken forcefully or violently, the baby's brain is repeatedly tossed against the inside of the skull. This motion ruptures blood vessels and breaks neural connections in the brain, leading to severe brain damage that can be life-threatening.<br><br><strong><em>Symptoms</em></strong><br>Difficulty staying awake, body tremors, trouble breathing, poor eating, vomiting, discolored skin, seizures, coma, and paralysis.<br><br><strong><em>Consequences</em></strong><br>Irreversible brain damage, permanent vision loss (partial or total), hearing loss, seizure disorders, development delays, intellectual disabilities, and cerebral palsy.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>Diagnosis<br></em></strong>Examination of child's medical history, physical exam to look for signs of injury and increased blood pressure, imaging tests (CT scan or MRI) to look for bleeding or injury in the brain, and X-rays to check for broken bones.<br><em>A doctor who suspects shaken baby syndrome MUST report it to the child welfare office and the police.<br><br></em><strong><em>Treatment<br></em></strong>Needs to be in the hospital (sometimes in the ICU), oxygen therapy to help child breathe, medications to reduce brain swelling, seizure medication, physical therapy, and surgery for brain bleeding.</div>]]></description>
