I learned that on average 10 million people in the world die of starvation every year. In fact, about one quarter of all the water consumed in the U.S. is used to grow food that will never get eaten.

Getting food to our table uses 10 percent of the total U.S. energy budget, uses 50 percent of U.S. land and swallows 80 percent of fresh water consumed in the United States.

In Hawai’i, we throw away about one quarter of our food and beverage which equates to a loss of about $700 per person per year. That’s equivalent to you just throwing 2 dollars in the trash can every single day when you wake up. We have about 200 people in SEEQS. If all the people in SEEQS throw two dollars in the trash can every single day, then after one year, we could use the money we had thrown away to buy a Tesla.

 

We love food, but we don’t respect food. We all want others to respect us and to be respected. We should give respect to others and food.

“We can help this school violence by creating bonds between the students by getting the kids to know their similarities and differences so that they can figure out how to bond and work together instead of creating chaos or in ways that might cause violence that’d become a problem.

“I learned about the ecosystems. If you remove one part of the food chain then everything else gets screwed up. It’s kind of interesting how like the smallest change can lead to drastic end results. It really goes to show that you need to be careful and think through what you do because there could be a lot of unintended consequences- whether it be good or bad. So, you got to be careful. And especially I think people need to start caring about the environment way more because looking through the facts and the statistics and seeing what would happen if sharks did die out and how little time we have left to reverse it, it’s very concerning- extremely concerning. 

“What I learned from the project- Getting the News- which was the topic that I chose which was newspaper versus digital news. And the main takeaway from this project was developing it. Being able to take a simple topic, break it all down using math to put down all the statistics and putting it back together in a way where others could understand it and learn from it as well.
