To have low self-esteem is a behavioral exceptionality that many people battle with. Self-esteem is perceived as how a person feels about themselves and their self worth. Therefore, if a person has low self-esteem, then they are likely to lack confidence and feel negatively towards themselves. The saying that "we as people are our worst critics" is very evident in those with low self-esteem. Those with low self-esteem give themselves little to no room for error. They are quick to blame themselves for any negative wrongdoings

“Low Self-Esteem: What Does It Mean to Lack Self-Esteem?” PsychAlive, 21 May 2019, https://www.psychalive.org/low-self-esteem/.

There are many different types of accommodations that teachers can make for students with low self-esteem. Some students may not want obvious special attention or treatment, therefore it is important that the teacher does not shine a light on this student's exceptionality (especially with a student who is already trying to hide due to their low self-esteem).

Students with low self-esteem are more likely to compare themselves to their peers, therefore allowing students to take tests or assessments away from the eyes or company of other students may be helpful. This way, the student with low self-esteem does not feel like all the other students are judging or watching. Not only that, but being separate can also limit the student with low self-esteem from comparing themselves to their peers.

“Article - Academic Accommodation for Students with Psychiatric Disability - A Resource Book.” ADCET, https://www.adcet.edu.au/resource/5954/academic-accommodation-for-students-with-psychiatric-disability-a-resource-book/.

Students with low self-esteem and all students in general should be given more responsibilities by the teacher. These tasks/responsibilities should not be difficult, rather simple so that the students are guaranteed to succeed. This way a student with low self-esteem is given more opportunities to shine and succeed. Teachers should look out for the student's strengths and assets and bring those into the light.

“Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).” Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders FASD, https://sites.duke.edu/fasd/chapter-6-the-fasd-student-and-behavioral-issues/effective-teaching-strategies-for-students-exhibiting-low-self-esteem/.
