I really appreciate hearing this interview, and I was really interested in what he mentioned he researched (the study of the spade game). I also found it interesting that he mentioned you learn by engaging in cultural-historical practices. I was also considering writing a thesis, but I am intimidated by the idea. It was nice and encouraging to hear him say to keep an open mind and not to do research on questions that you're good at, but that you are interested in. Thank you for this interview!

I am particularly interested in the JC Singleton research as this has been an area of passion for me as a teacher and now an administrator. I appreciate your advice on following your passion and our research has to mean something to us. This exact concept helped me to narrow down an area of focus for this course. Your advice on doing a thesis was pretty convincing to me as I planned on completing this program in a year with the comp exam but taking the time to do a thesis on what I am passionate about might serve me better int he end.

As someone who has taken classes with Dr. Al Schadamen, I am so glad I got to watch that. There's a lot to unpack! Firstly, he shouted out one of my favorite professors, Maris! I loved her! Next, I really appreciate his key advice points; to follow my passion and pay attention in my classes so I do not limit myself in one way of researching. I think this is valuable advice because I agree that it might be easy to stick to the method that you think you're good at but we're here to expand our knowledge and become more educated!

One other note, his favorite publication is someone who went to the same high school as me! It is awesome to see people from Oroville becoming successful. I am also definitely going to read her article because I am super interested in SEL!

After listening to Al Schademan's interview, a couple of key takeaways that I got from the interview were the advice Al Schademan recommended for new researchers. For example, Al mentioned that when choosing a topic, it should always mean something deep to you, such as following your passion. He also mentioned paying close attention in your research methods courses and asking research questions that interest you. Another key takeaway that I got from this interview was Al's final thoughts, which he talked about strongly recommend doing a thesis and that you won't forget it. Originally, I wanted to work on a project and or do the comp exam, but after Al suggested it, I might give it a try/look into this option in the near future. Lastly, Al suggested choosing a mentor wisely and overall picking someone who has a great skill set and someone you can get along/work with. This is something I will keep in mind in the future when I begin to do my research. Overall, I really liked the advice and final thoughts Al gave out. I found everything he said to be meaningful and helpful.

I found Dr. Schademan's interview to be really comforting and reassuring. Its validating to hear that someone else out there loves research but also gets impatient with the amount of time it can take. I also appreciated his thoughts about sticking to what we are passionate about, choose methods that answer our questions, building our researcher's toolbox, and choosing a chair that we connect with. A Master's thesis is a very personal, lengthy process and it needs to make sense to the person working on it. Big thank you to Dr. Schademan!

My mom is currently a TK teacher, and she is highly dedicated to implementing SEL programs in her classroom. I think she would love to read the article you recommended and I can't wait to share it with her. I really appreciated your advice about research methods. I think, as a beginning MA student, it can be daunting to try and engage with research methods you are not really familiar with. Your suggestion that becoming well-versed in as many methods as possible just because you never know is extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time!

Thank you Dr. Schademan for sharing your insight and for discussing the research that you've done in the past. Something that stood out to me was how you mentioned that when it comes to selecting a topic for your research it should be something that has deep meaning to you, and it really has to be something that you are passionate about. Although this may seem like the obvious choice, sometimes there is so many topics it really is hard to narrow down what you want to learn and research. Therefore, I like that you bring up that it should be something that you love. Additionally, this stood out to me because I've always related research to be so serious and separate from a passion but I can see how similar to teaching, it really does have to be something that you are passionate for in order for it to work out.

He doesn't just discuss methods and data; he emphasizes a passion for working with people and making research findings accessible and meaningful to a broader audience. His advice to "follow your passion" and avoid being pigeonholed as strictly "qualitative" or "quantitative" is a powerful reminder that research is a creative process driven by curiosity and real-world impact.

Dr. Schademan's research of African American men playing spades and comparing their decision making skills with mathematics and science is truly fascinating. One thing I found very helpful was when you mentioned that we should utilize different methods of research.

I was inspired by how Dr. Shademan connected cultural practices like playing spades to scientific and mathematical thinking. It’s a powerful reminder of how learning is deeply embedded in everyday life. I also appreciated the emphasis on collaboration and the advice about choosing research questions based on passion rather than comfort with methods.
