The crime he committed to get invited to Indian Island was very selfish - he let a tribe of over 20 men die just to save himself. He seems like the type of person who would take extreme measures just to practice self preservation. Also, in chapter 16, he expresses his lack of empathy for the others and his crimes - I've no pity for you. Don't expect it!"(Christie Chapter 16, Section II).
