1. Mr.Dark started threatening Charles in the library to be able to find the boys in chapter 41. Dark started saying that he could tell the witch to kill him and make it look as if it had been natural "one of my friends, outside, can fix you so it seems you died of most natural heart failure"(chapter 41, page 192).
2. During chapter 52 Mr.Dark turns himself into a little boy using the merry-go-round to get Charles into a trap. Before anything bad happens, Charles notices its him "Strange hearing that from you, Jed. So it must seem. Good to evil seems evil. So I will only do good to you, Jed, I will simply hold you and watch you poison yourself. I will do good to you, Jed, Mr.Dark, Mr. Propietor, boy..." (chapter 52, page 248)

1. Thoughts- "Whatever they do, thought Will, we must do it first"(Page 135, Chapter 30). This implies that Will's thoughts at that moment was that he and Jim have to do something to make the witch go away but they had to do it fast. They had to do it before the witch could do anything before them.
2. Effect on others-In chapter 33 Charles Halloway was talking to Will on the phone and Will did not tell him what what he just told him to wish him luck. Charles's reaction was "Willy, don't"(Page 150, Chapter 33). He reacted in a scared and worried way. Will effected his dad in a strong way because his dad was very worried about him.

1. In chapter 2, the appearance of Charles is expressed as being an old looking janitor, with "moon-white hair" and explained how he was always stunned by his son Will and how he has grown and is so young (chapter 2, pg.12-13) this helps develop his character by giving an idea that since he is old he might be sad because of Charles and the fact that he is so young and big since he's always stunned by it and he himself is old.
2. In chapter 8, when Charles "...lifted a gray, slightly worried, very tired graze at his son..." after taking a look at the handbill that action affected Will by making him worried afterwards and it caused him to want to go back down the stairs and go to his dad but instead he just slowly and saddened went upstairs, so Charles was affecting other characters by his actions.

This story takes place mainly during late October before Jim and Will's birthday. This happened in a town called Greentown, Illinois(prologue, page 1). This setting is important to the plot since a storm is supposed to be coming there and they still decided to do the carnival so it could make the reader very suspicious as to why they would be planning a carnival around the same time for some reason.

The story's theme would be Good vs. Evil since in every part of the book that is open there is something or someone bad and good.
The boys are a complete example of this theme since Will would be the one that is always trying to do the right thing and follow the rules, while Jim is all about breaking the rules and not really thinking about the consequences of the actions he does

"The library," said Will. I'm even afraid of it, now".(Page 172, Chapter 38 ). The library played a very important role in building suspense in the story. The library is just where Charles Halloway works as a janitor, but it is very important because the view of the library in Will's perspective is changing and now it's changing in the other characters perspective.

The carnival which obviously was almost what the story was centered on for the most part and it made a huge part and impact on the story, for example it was where the met Mr.Dark for the first time which plays a huge part one developing the plot since Mr.Dark is the main antagonist of the story.

One of the stories themes was lack of contentment and that theme was expressed by many characters with were very discontent with their ages to the point where they would do anything to be older or younger in some cases. For example, when Jim jumps onto the moving Carousel to age which ends up almost killing him and also Charles's desire to be younger and have his boyhood back is really clearly shown in the beginning of the story (chapter 3, page 16). But the characters end up learning that age isn't just about the literal number or just appearance either.

Another of the story's theme's is loss of innocence. Loss of innocence is shown through mostly Will than it is in Jim but Jim experiences it too. "...they grew up overnight, and were never so young anymore"(Prologue, pg. 2) and you could take that literally or figuratively but if you were to take it figuratively they are basically saying that the boys were never so innocent again. Also by the end of the story Will's innocence about the Earth and how its not perfect and its gonna be evil sometimes and bad and Jim's innocence of not maybe thinking things through, being a rebel, and not being to rational and naive changes by the end of the story too.
