Used for: Facts, general truths, and things that always happen.

Structure:

If + present simple, present simple

Examples:

• If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.

• If it rains, the ground gets wet.

• If students are late, the teacher gets angry.

Tip: Both clauses are in the present tense. Can be replaced with “when” in many cases.

🔮 2. First Conditional

Used for: Real future possibilities – things that are likely or possible to happen.

Structure:

If + present simple, will + base verb

Examples:

• If it rains tomorrow, we will cancel the trip.

• If you study hard, you will pass the exam.

• If I see her, I will tell her the news.

Tip: Use this for promises, warnings, or offers related to the future.

💭 3. Second Conditional

Used for: Unreal or imaginary situations in the present or future.

Structure:

If + past simple, would + base verb

Examples:

• If I had wings, I would fly around the world.

• If he studied more, he would get better grades.

• If we were rich, we would travel a lot.

Tip: Use this for hypothetical or unlikely situations. Even though it’s about now/future, the past tense shows that it’s not real.
