My quote is, "It was whispered that Betty had been sent to the country because she was incorrigible, a word I had to look up in the big dictionary at the schoolhouse" (Wolk 5). The word is "incorrigible". After research, the word means having habits and tendencies that can't be corrected. It has a negative connotation because, in this instance, Betty had an unbreakable, poor habit that caused her to be sent away.

I predict that a possible theme in the story is that no one can truly change. On page 11, Annabelle's grandfather is talking to her about how Wolf Hollow got its name from all of the wolves that used to live there, and Annabelle suggests that the wolves might be friendly like dogs, if they were raised correctly. Her grandfather replies, "A wolf is not a dog and never will be, no matter how you raise it" (Wolk 11). As you can see, Annabelle's grandfather is implying that you can't do anything to change the way someone is, and I think that this might become a major problem that is resolved later in the story.

In chapter two, Annabelle reflects over her conversation with Betty in the forest. The author writes, "I decided, as I plodded slowly up the path, that Betty wouldn't go after Henry or James until she tried me, so I'd wait to see if she was a barker or a biter before telling my parents anything that might make Betty a whole lot angrier than she already was. But I confessed to myself that I was afraid in a way that I hadn't known before" ( Wolk 17). It is clear that one of the obstacles Annabelle will have to overcome during the story is dealing with Betty.

As Annabelle is trying to figure out who threw the rock, Toby becomes a suspect due to the time period. Since World War II is going on, Germans are frowned upon. Toby strongly dislikes Germans, so it's theorized he was aiming a rock at Mr. Ansel, a German in Wolf Hollow. This is historically significant because the time period is affecting characters motivations.

One example of author's craft being used in the story is foreshadowing. After Annabelle explains to her parents that Betty has been threatening her and her brothers at school and in Wolf Hollow, her father makes her promise that she will not keep this information to herself anyone. The author writes from Annabelle's perspective, "It was an easy promise to make. I had no intention of lying to my father or mother about anything else. I just didn't know how complicated things would become" (Wolk 81). This was a very powerful line in the story because it suggested to the reader that there was going to be a dramatic change in the story. As you can see, the use of foreshadowing in the story provides the reader with a suspenseful mood, and it hints that something intense is going to happen.

In the book, Wolf Hollow, the author uses imagery to convey the injury and the impact it had on Ruth. Just after the rock hit Ruth, the author writes, "Later, everyone would wonder what Ruth had ever done to deserve what happened next. The rock that caught Ruth square in the eye was small enough so her brow did not deflect it, large enough that it knocked her on her back and did her eye real hurt. That much was clear even to me as I watched the blood spill down her cheek" (Wolk 65). The author enhances this moment by using imagery because it is significant to the plot. The imagery described what happened to Ruth and how she never deserved it. This also helps the reader comprehend the rock that completely changed Ruth's life and changed the course of the story.

A type of conflict that arose in Wolf Hollow is Character Vs. Self. Annabelle had learned to lie, so she took advantage of that opportunity. After keeping a secret about Toby hiding in the barn and now, she knows where Betty is, she continues to use this power she has. The author writes, "Or I could just stand up right now and say, 'I think I know where Betty is.' I almost did. The words leaned out of my mouth and nearly made the jump..." (Wolk 185). This is significant to the plot because, without the conflict of lying, the plot wouldn't be too good. This also displays she knows that she is lying and she could stop it, but it would make the main character you follow have no battles with themselves.

The author Lauren Wolk of Wolf Hollow uses a stunned and heartbroken tone to display Annabelle's feelings after having a deep talk with Toby. Toby is a character known for being kept to himself, so once he opens up, it really pulled on Annabelle's heartstrings. Wolk writes, "As I passed the henhouse, one of the chickens clucked at me through the screen of its little window and I wanted to kiss the yellow thorn of its beak. If only a dog had come blustering out of the woodshed to grant me passage, I would have lain down in the leaves and made him a pillow. I would have stayed there and let his fur become my world for a while... And I buttoned my heart, took a deep breath..." (Wolk 177-178). The author uses a language that tells the reader what she would do now after learning from Toby that you never know what people are going through. Annabelle would be more careful and gracious to her surroundings. By using this language, the author creates a regretful and heartfelt mood.

I can infer Betty is going to be at the hospital for a while after the injury she went through. After finding Betty in the hole barely moving and screaming, they find out she has been severely injured. The author of Wolf Hollow writes, "'It impaled her,' the constable said. 'It's through her shoulder.'...we all knew that she needed to get to a hospital quickly" (Wolk 200/201) I can predict this because the author uses words that detail on how bad the injury Betty has. This leads me to predict that Betty will need time to heal in the hospital.

Annabelle is trying to solve the mystery of how all of this happened, and since the book is in first person, the reader will try to hunt for answers too. In the book, Annabelle is talking to her dad and explains she may know where Betty is. "'Daddy, I think I know where Betty is.' Which stops him cold," (Wolk 190/191). On page 30, Annabelle considers telling her mother about Betty threatening her, but releases her thought. Later on, Annabelle explains everything to her parents. The book says, "So I told him everything from the beginning," (Wolk 80). This shows that telling someone the truth, makes everything better, as if a weight is lifted off your shoulders. After that, Annabelle's parents go to the Glengarry's and talk to them about it, Betty pleaded innocent but Annabelle's parents now knew the truth. It is clear that a possible theme of Wolf Hollow is how explaining the truth can be relieving.

At the end of the story, she claims, "But Wolf Hollow was also where I learned to tell the truth in that year before I turned twelve: about things from which refuge was impossible," (Wolk 291). Annabelle and her family have been hiding Toby for a while, and it is getting challenging. After coming home from school, Annabelle heads inside. Wolk writes, "'Did you give Jordan some lunch?' At which my mother looked up, smiling. 'No, Annabelle. Your father asked him to help in the haymow all day, but we didn't invite him in at lunch time'" (Wolk 229). This immediately signifies how Annabelle's mother is a sarcastic person, but she also does this to help the tough issue by bringing some joy to it. This author used this type of irony to convey character traits and tone.

In the book, Annabelle is the main character who is trying to get her friend Toby out of trouble, because mischievous Betty told everyone that Toby pushed her down a well, and then she died. Andy, who was best friends with Betty, knows exactly where she was and what she was doing the day before she was trapped in the well, and Annabelle thinks he might know more than people think he does. On page 225, Lauren Wolk writes, "If proving Toby innocent was the problem, then Andy was the answer.

In the book, I can infer that Annabelle will be able to prove that Toby has never hurt Betty, and she will learn something that no one yet knows. A bully named Betty has fallen down a well and tells everyone that a man named Toby pushed her, but Annabelle knows that he didn't, but she needs evidence. The author writes, "... I needed to convince Andy that we already knew the truth that he had not yet told. I spent the rest of the day thinking about that. And by the time school ended, I had the beginnings of an idea" (Wolk 225), and it is clear that Annabelle thinks that she can get the truth out of Andy. As you can see, the author helps the reader infer that Annabelle is about to change something drastically in the story, and shift some people's perspectives on Toby.

Symbolism

In "Wolf Hollow," there is a stone in the middle of the woods that Annabelle likes to visit that shows symbolism in the story, and she calls it the Turtle Stone. The author writes, "The Turtle Stone sat at the center of the clearing like a great moon in a galaxy of yellow maple stars. It was a beautiful thing with quartz veins running deep through its hard, reddish shell" (Wolk 227). The author goes on to write how it is one of a kind in the woods, and no one knows why it is there. Annabelle reflects that she thinks it has a greater meaning than just being a pretty rock, and that it is an ancient stone with many memories. On the bottom of page 227 it says, "I ran my hand over the stone, expecting some suggestion of softness. Instead, the stone itself told me a thing or two about age and resilience, and the trees at the edge of the clearing quietly concurred." In conclusion, the author implies that the stone is more complex than it seems, and Annabelle finds it as something she can rely on, showing symbolism.

My interesting vocabulary quote is, "...when the peaches were in their brief blossom and the sun behind them made a rosy miasma of the orchard" (Wolk 26). After reading definitions of miasma, I can conclude that it means that the area had an unpleasant smell or fume. As you can see, the author adds to the imagery of the scene by saying that the blossoms put off a displeasing smell, which is a negative connotation.

My interesting vocabulary word from Wolf Hollow is obliged. After Toby returns to the barn after running away suddenly, he tells Annabelle that he came back because he felt bad that he never said goodbye to her, and Annabelle says, "You didn't need to feel obliged" (Wolk 246). After looking into the definition, I know that obliged means to feel the need to do something for someone. Based on evidence, I can conclude that Toby felt that he needed to properly say goodbye to Annabelle before running away from her, which gives a negative connotation, because Annabelle doesn't want him to feel that way.

Sympathy/Empathy

In "Wolf Hollow," Annabelle feels very sympathetic and empathetic after a character named Betty dies. When Annabelle learns that the girl who bullied her at school has died, she feels guilty, but also very sympathetic. On pages 260 and 261, she puts herself in Betty's shoes while she was injured and trapped down in a well. The author writes, "I pictured Betty in the dark, cold, terrifying well, badly hurt. And dying all by herself." Annabelle is also very sympathetic about the terrible incident Betty had, and feels as though it was her fault that she was in the well for so long. The author writes, "I could've found her faster" (Wolk 260). All in all, Annabelle is very sympathetic as well as empathetic about Betty's circumstances, and feels even worse after she learns that Betty has died.

In the story, one of Annabelle's character vs society conflicts was that she knew the truth, but she couldn't ever do enough to make everyone else listen to it. The author writes, "And that there would be people that would never hear my one small voice, no matter what I had to say" (Wolk 228). As you can see, although Annabelle knows the truth about something that others don't, she is struggling with the fact that no one will listen to her, presenting a big conflict in the story.

Annabelle has taken matters into her own hands, and while some of her family is mad, her grandfather isn't. The author writes, "Gumption's a good thing, if you ask me" (Wolk 237). After researching, I can conclude that gumption means to be independent and decide to do something all on your own. Based off of evidence, I can see that Annabelle's grandfather likes that Annabelle made a choice by herself, and he isn't angry, which makes it a positive connotation.
