The historical setting of “The Disenchantments” had no important push to the plot of the story. We know that it is set in more modern times(2008-11 I’d presume), but we don’t have a direct year. Political power has no weight to this story as there aren’t any indications that it matters at all. The most important historical events are personal events for the main character(s); a concert for Riot Grrrl, finding out their mother had an affair, their mom going to Europe, anxiety attacks in middle school. Although there isn’t any nationally historical presence, the best information we get is from the character’s own personal histories.

For the social contexts of the story, “The Disenchantments” focuses more on the socially ‘poor’ aspect of the west coast. We see different communities throughout the novel, so there isn’t a set one that we are always around. We see junkies, poor people trying to live their best lives, single mothers, and people who feel like they can’t go anywhere or be anybody because they feel stuck in their community or their job.

For the economic contexts, “The Disenchantments” shows mostly the 'poverty-ridden' or lower class individuals. We see that in this story, however, money really doesn’t affect how the main characters see people. Although the venues the band goes are rundown and the people they meet are poor, they always have fun, the opposite of when we see them in a college environment when they drop off Meg. Economic power isn’t a world issue nor is it a problem for the story or our main characters either.
