Nature walks/outdoor science:

Nature walks or incorporating elements of science outdoors is a great way to foster students' love of science through the real world. It can have students look for different aspects of science in nature and have them explore their environment as well. This could be beneficial for younger grades such as k-2, as it provides them a way to move and get their energy out in a productive way. This would engage and motivate the students, as they are getting a chance to explore nature and apply that to their learning. It moves beyond traditional teaching and allows them to observe nature. This would increase engagement for EL students, as they get a chance to engage in their learning, without stressing about language. Nature walks often include observations, drawings, etc which are not writing or reading heavy.

Role-playing:

In Role-playing, students are given characters to act out in a situation given to them. While this is appropriate for every grade level, it would be the most appropriate for the 3-5th grade range. This is because students could handle the responsibility of lines and acting but are still young enough to engage and enjoy acting for the class. This would engage and motivate students as they are getting a chance to act and experience what they are learning firsthand. Role-playing is a student-led experience that allows students to be creative with their education. This would be a great chance to increase engagement with students with disabilities, as they can easily be incorporated into a role-playing role, and get a chance to shine with their classmates.

Project-based learning projects:

Project-based learning projects is the process of students building a project in an engaging and meaningful way, exploring real-world applications (Evertson, Emmer, & Poole, 2022).This can be implemented in most grades; however, older grades such as 6-8th might benefit the most from it. This is because they could dive deeper into the 5Es and explain and explore deeper than the younger grade levels. This would engage and motivate students as it has them engage in a project that is tied to their learning. Instead of learning about a subject via a textbook or lecture only, they receive a hands-on experience.

Gamification is the process of using games, and common elements of games such as points/rewards, etc., to engage students in their learning. This would work best for any grade, k-8th. For the younger grades, it could be appropriate to incentivize them to learn; however, for the older grades, it could provide them with a fun outlet for learning that is often not presented to them. This would engage and motivate students as it gives them a fun and reward-based experience, while they are learning and showing their knowledge on a given subject. Gamification can be used in any learning environment, including digitally!

Webinars:

Webinars are presentations given virtually. This would be most appropriate for older grades, as they have a longer attention span. However, teachers must be aware of how long webinars are and how much they are relying on them. If they are relatively quick, engaging, and informative, they can be useful in the classroom. An example of this could be a webinar, if in a digital learning environment, that has students get up and move around, respond in discussion forums, etc. This would be most beneficial for older grades such as 6-8th, as students have a longer attention span. This would motivate and engage students because, if done right, webinars allow students a unique learning experience, in contrast to a typical learning environment. It can lead them to engage and interact with their learning in ways they had not thought before. Webinars can be included in any learning environment, including digitally!

Simulations are an immersive experience where students can use their skills and knowledge to navigate a real-life situation. This would be most beneficial in 3-5th, or even 6-8th. This is because students would have the base knowledge to be able to complete and enjoy the simulation. This would help engage and motivate students, as they get a chance to be immersed in an interactive experience that engages their learning. Simulations are a fun outlet for students to experiment and explore in ways we many times cannot do in the real learning setting. This technology tool is a unique learning opportunity presented in the 21st century.

An example of a simulation for students:Energy Forms and Changes - Conservation of Energy | Energy Systems | Energy Transfer - PhET Interactive Simulations

Virtual field trips are digital immersions that have students explore and experience a setting virtually. Virtual field trips would be really engaging for younger grades, such as k-2. This would be a great tool to use before their first field trip, to show them an example of what a field trip could be. Virtual field trips help students stay engaged and motivated by offering them an interactive and safe way to see the world. In addition, this technological tool gives them a way to see places they would not have the opportunity to see otherwise.

Through this link, teachers can book a virtual field trip for their students:

Virtual Field Trips | San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Virtual Field Trips
