These worms are designed to simply spread and are not created to intentionally damage a host system. However the very act of transmitting worms around a network can cause severe disruptions as network bandwidth is filled or network traffic increased.

Payloads can take many forms as worms maliciously disrupt a system as with most malware. Types of payload involve making the worm...
  • Delete files on the host system
  • Encrypts files and demands payment to release them (ransomeware)
  • Send attachments via email
  • Create a 'backdoor' in an infected machine

Backdoors allow the worm creator to control an infected computer by bypassing authentication. These machines and their respective networks (called 'botnets) are often used to send spam and various junk.
