The Burmese traditional dress, known as "longyi" for both men and women, is a multipurpose garment. The longyi is a cylindrical piece of cloth, usually about 2 meters long, that is wrapped around the waist and tucked in securely.

For men, it is often paired with a collarless shirt called an "eingyi," while women wear it with a blouse that may feature embroidery or lace. Women’s longyis often have vibrant patterns, whereas men’s designs are more subtle. The dress is completed with a shawl for formal occasions, reflecting Myanmar's rich cultural heritage.

thamineblog. (2018, March 11). The Evolution of Burmese Dress.

Social inclusion guarantees that Burmese refugees who come to Australia get the care and assistance they need, both now and in the future. Refugees who are properly accepted into society have better mental health, better employment, and easier access to healthcare. On the other hand, discrimination frequently has a negative impact on health, leading to a rise in sickness, stress, and the occurrence of mental health disorders. These negative outcomes can be minimised by encouraging social inclusion, which builds stronger, more resilient communities where even the most disadvantaged individuals can benefit.

World Health Organization.

South-east Asian nation of Myanmar (previously known as Burma) is the main origin of Burmese refugees. Political ethnic conflict, and military control have caused a large number of Burmese to flee their country. Australia has welcomed Burmese refugees (2000s-2010s).

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant health problem among Burmese refugees because of possible exposure during relocation. For the treatment of tuberculosis (TB), Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) is recommended by the Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide. By having medical professionals monitor patients, DOT provides medication adherence, promoting efficient treatment and minimising drug resistance.

Refugee health assessment» Australian Refugee Health.
