I found myself nodding and enthusiastically writing notes as I was reading. This speaks to the kind of teacher I want to be but also points to the nuance and tension between this approach and the ultimate outcome of balancing power in the class.

My question for you is this:
How do we balance what learners say they want and need with what we feel they actually need to grow as learners? An example from my own experience would be getting feedback that my students hated having to develop and teach a 10-minute session on a topic related to our class. They preferred to write and hand in a paper. I understand that this can be uncomfortable but one of the objectives of the class was to practice speaking about potentially difficult subjects to develop some familiarity and comfort.

This reading addresses the four pillars of authenticity, which I think I try to incorporate in my teaching in one way or another already: congruence, full disclosure, responsiveness, and personhood. 

For my question, I’d like you to choose one of the 4 pillars and describe one way you have either successfully implemented this in your teaching, or maybe fell short at implementing it. If you don’t have formal teaching experience, feel free to discuss this from a learner perspective!

The author, Brookfield, contends that the relationship between students and teachers should balance the teacher’s role as an ally and an authority. Further, the author details that the concept of personhood, of revealing (limited) personal experiences and opinions, helps to foster an authentic experience for all. To my peers, I ask: How do you use the concept of personhood to develop trusting relationships with your students, while maintaining, or re-enforcing authority as an instructor?
