He was living in the lobby of the hospital where she was staying, sleeping on makeshift beds out of lobby benches and almost all of his meals came from vending machines. He noticed that they weren't the only parents going through this, and that many people were doing the same. Hotel rooms weren't an option for most families because they added cost to the medical bills. He began to raise funds to build an affordable place where families could stay in the hospital, but got their own "hotel" rooms too. They weren't raising enough, so he contacted McDonald's for advertisement. They agreed, giving the Ronald McDonald House its name. In fact, Regional Manager Ed Rensi liked this idea so much that he created the St.Patrick's Day Shamrock Shake campaign. All funds from them would go to Fred. Fred would use them to buy an old house very close to the hospital. By 1979, 10 more houses opened. By 1984, local communities founded another 60 houses. 53 more opened by 1989. Today, more than 377 Ronald McDonald House are in 45 countries and regions across the globe, giving comfort to more than 10 million families worldwide.

The meal prep was a last minute thing Isla and I did because we were worried that the soda tabs weren't enough. The collection of soda tabs were a great way to get the school involved, but (with only a week to collect) we were concerned that we wouldn't collect enough to help.
