The varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes two clinical infectious diseases, chickenpox (varicella) and shingles (zoster).

Chickenpox is the primary infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It's an acute, highly contagious condition that mostly affects youngsters under the age of ten. Chickenpox is usually a mild, self-limiting illness and most healthy children recover with no complications. Adults are more likely to suffer more severe disease than children. 

Shingles can occur in anyone who has had chickenpox in the past. Because it is a recurrence or reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, people can only develop it if they previously had chickenpox.

It is impossible to get shingles from being exposed to someone who has chickenpox.
It is conceivable, however, to contract chickenpox after coming into contact with someone who has shingles. Second attacks of chickenpox are uncommon, although they do happen.

Typically, the virus is spread via coughing and sneezing, as this allows viral-containing droplets to be come airborne. VZV has an incubation period of about 10-21 days and is most contagious through physical contact a few days before symptoms occur. During this incubation period, the virus spreads to the lymph nodes, the liver, and the lungs. This process known as primary viremia. As the incubation period progresses, the virus makes its way to the skin via both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, initiating secondary viremia. As the infection progresses, small skin vesicles filled with pus and infected cell particles form on the skin surface. These lesions are the 'pox' of chickenpox.

A doctor can diagnose a rash only by looking at it. Certain concerns, such as severity, pregnancy, unusual symptoms, immunizations, and others, might necessitate further testing.

A blood test can also be performed to identify whether someone is currently infected with chickenpox or is immune to it. A little amount of blood is drawn and sent to a lab where antibodies to the varicella-zoster virus are evaluated. The varicella-zoster virus is the virus that causes chickenpox.

In some cases, a viral culture is utilised instead of a blood test. A sample of blister fluid is taken and sent to a laboratory, where the specimen is allowed to develop. After a period of time, it is tested for the varicella-zoster virus.

Blisters that are dry or crusted are no longer able to spread chickenpox. Other than that, a person might get the infection by indirectly touch the cloth of infected person.

A doctor may prescribe an antihistamine to relieve itching. The disease, on the other hand, is usually allowed to run its course.

If a patient is at high risk of complications, a doctor may prescribe an antiviral drug such as acyclovir. This drug, if taken within 24 hours after the beginning of the rash, may help to lessen the severity of chickenpox.

Certain antiviral medicines, including as valacyclovir and famciclovir, may also help to lessen the severity of the disease, however they aren't always approved or suited for everyone.

Getting vaccinated against chickenpox is an excellent way to avoid contracting the disease. Chickenpox vaccine is highly safe and effective at preventing the disease. The vaccine protects the vast majority of people from contracting chickenpox.
