Patrick is one of my three brothers. He is 20 years old and attends the University of Portland. He has always inspired me by his knowledge and kindness. Pat is the mediator in our family and always helps resolve conflicts. He supports me in everything I do. Pat has also given me great memories. Out of all my brothers, Pat is usually the one who goes on spontaneous trips with me to different places. The biggest way Patrick has influenced my life is by exposing me to autism. Patrick was diagnosed at 3 with mild autism spectrum disorder. His disability has dramatically affected my life and my home environment. His struggles caused my family stress and anxiety. Pat has largely influenced my desire to become a physician and take care of people with struggles.

My dad, Bob Boldt, is my biggest supporter and has influenced who I am today. My dad and I are very close and often times have a more friend-like relationship than the typical father daughter. My dad is very determined and competitive. These are some of my most prominent qualities. I am extremely determined in accomplishing my goals. My dad has influenced my sense of humor greatly. Another large way my dad has impacted my life is by introducing me to surfing. Surfing is my escape. It allows my mind to go numb and for me to immerse myself in nature. While surfing, my dad and I often talk and share different things happening our lives. My dad is my rock and the person who pushes me to be a better version of myself.

We have traveled across the country to compete in our annual sectionals competition. This group has given me friendships which are super strong and deep. RCC has also pushed me in my skating skills as well as ability to stay committed to something. I have also learned how to work effectively within a team and guide my team to success.

Over the two weeks, I talked with my group, went on hikes, learned about Notre Dame, and enriched our spirituality. This group that I met really helped broaden my perspective and strengthen my faith. It also gave me new friendships with people across the country.

Rite of Passage: Confirmation

I was confirmed two years ago along with my brother Patrick. This experience was fulfilling because I knew that I had fully committed to the Catholic church. However, I did not feel very impacted by the actual ritual. I did not feel a major change, although I'm not sure you are supposed to. I also never attended any classes before being confirmed (besides the rehearsal). This was because the priest knew my old school very well and its reputation as being very Catholic and focused on teaching religion. I appreciated the fact I did not have to go to classes because I would have been bored since my school had already covered all the material in great depth.

Kairos was a rite of passage as a senior. It helped me deepen my spirituality and consider what events have impacted my life and my life choices. It also helped prepare me for the rest of senior year and the anxiety/stress of college applications. After Kairos, I felt more officially like a senior and like a young adult. Kairos also helped me make friends with people outside my tradition friend group. During Kairos, I performed several rituals and acts which tested and challenged me. These actions are indicative of a rite of passage.

Song: "Dreams Come True" by Brandon Flowers

I chose this song because for 2 reasons. 1, it is super upbeat and fun to listen to. 2, I really like its message. The song discusses how dreams are really possible if you put in the work and are determined enough. The song starts with the idea that dreams often feel impossible or out of reach. The lyrics also criticize someone who is constantly "bracing for the crash land". In other words, some people are constantly worried so they never take a risk. I believe that in order to accomplish your dreams you have to take risks but also work hard.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYE-seEt4rA

“The living know it indirectly—through heat, through light, through tendrils of smoke snaking through the sky, through the scent of burning wood, through the itch of ash in the eye”.
I chose this quote because I have always had trouble understanding how the holy spirit can be seen in my daily life. This quote helped show me how the holy spirit is in nature. Although we cannot see the Holy Spirit, we can connect to it in other ways.

“You don’t have to have everything together to be baptized…”
I really liked this quote because it shows how Baptism is universal and does not require people to be perfect. Everyone is fallible and not perfect at all times. However, God still welcomes us into his community of love and everlasting life.

"Two thousand years later, John’s call remains a wilderness call, a cry from the margins." page 42
This quote stuck me because of its emphasis on helping minorities and those at the sidelines of society. Often times, we forget that the mission of Christ was not to sit in fancy church or buy expensive clothes for mass. Rather, we are supposed to help the minorities in our society who are not being taken care of or who are being oppressed. This is what Jesus' message and mission.

Nouwen believed in the "theology of the heart". He valued connections and forming relationships. I find this very important in our society. I believe that people should make a conscious effort to try to connect with others. I love his quote "Do not hesitate to love and to love deeply". For myself, I can be hesitant to connect deeply with others. But as Nouwen points outs, forming friendships is vital to a healthy and happy life. I also found Nouwen's time at "L'Arche" very intriguing. At L'Arche, Nouwen lived modestly at a place dedicated to people with intellectual disabilities. I believe that Nouwen's time at L'Arche helped provide him a more diverse understanding of society.
