In 1850s South Carolina, Rose, an enslaved woman, faced a crisis: the

imminent sale of her young daughter Ashley. She quickly packed a

cotton bag with a few items. Rose and Ashley would never be reunited,

and, decades later, Ashley’s granddaughter Ruth embroidered this

family history on the sack in spare, haunting language. The book is a story of resilience, love, collective memories.

Part 1: Youths responded to the prompt: If you could pack all the ways you feel the love (objects, materials, emotions etc) and share love, what would you put in your bag to gift to a loved one? How are you generous with your love? Would you put your favorite jewerly? Food? Clothing? Book? Words?

Responses varied: plushies, airplane, nuts, grand-maman, beetles, a unicorn. Some bags are bigger than other hehe

one participant would pick a paper in the pot which would determine the classroom

prompt. For eg, participant A would pick the combo associated to nest and all the class would draw a nest on their sheets. They had a few minutes per drawing, then we would picked a new prompt.

Combining a land-based pedagogy and game-based was so succesful!!! Youths were so engaged it was truly a magical activity. I absolutely love the response they created and observing how different one drawing would be from another. My class varies in ages, from 2-16 years old and all participated with true motivation. Yeah :-) feel free to carry this activity in your placements !!
