In the beginning we know that Richard really didn't understand what the society he lived in was like. And he just questioned his mom because he didn't understand anything he didn't understand why the white man would beat the black man and he just didn't understand it. But then things start to change at the age of 6 he becomes a drunkard, and starts beginning to understand the society he lives in. He starts to understand that white people are capable of killing a black person for no reason and nothing would be done about it. The family cannot see the loved ones dead boy nor could they have their personal belongings.
