He had opposed the nazi regime, and He was accused of treason. He was sentenced to death. He was beheaded by a guillotine in the execution room of Plötzensee prison in Berlin on October 27, 1924, just ten days after his arrest in February of 1942. his friends were lucky that they survived the war; all they had was prison time.
