When they ground the chips into powder they made the surface area bigger and exposed more molecules, which made the reaction faster because more molecules were colliding and causing an reaction.

Where's in the reaction with chips the surface area is smaller and the acid molecules have to dissolve the outer molecules of the chips before it gets to the centre.

Increasing the surface area of a reactant, eg marble, creates a bigger reaction when mixed with the second

reactant, hydrochloric acid. The surface area is increased by powdering the marble. This exposes more

molecules, which provides the hydrochloric acid with more to collide with. Having a higher concentrate of

hydrochloric also effects the reaction. A higher concentration means more molecules for reaction, which

means a bigger reaction.
