Feudalism was the system in the Medieval times in which Lords were in charge of the King's land, which were given to knights in exchange for their service. Peasants were to farm and grow food for the Lords on the Lords' land. In exchange for their labor, peasants got a home and a share of the food made. If you were born in a social class, you were most likely to stay in that class for the rest of your life.

In the feudal system, the more land you had, the higher position you would be in/ the more respect you got. The highest role was The Pope. The next place was the King and/or Queen. The next position were the Nobles and Lords. Then, there were knights. The least respected character to be would be the peasants.

Peasants made up what was most of the social pyramid during the Middle Ages. Peasants were like slaves, but had a few more rights if the Lord or knight granted permission for them to be able to do something. Peasant life was hard. Many peasants had to work from sunup to sundown every day to ensure a roof over their heads the next day. Peasants payed taxes to the lord and king in food that they've grown, but they got to keep some of the crops for their use. Some peasants were exceptions, meaning that they were free and were not required to work the land 24/7, but most were. Serfs were somewhat similar to peasants, but many people confuse them for being the same thing.

Knights were the elite military members of the social pyramid. They provided protection and military service to the lords, which the knights got paid in land for. Knights had to be on guard because they could have been called to war at any time. When attacked, the knights had to protect both his own family and the lord/the manor. Once theknights received land, they kept as much as they wanted for themselves and also distrubuted some to peasants to farm for them. Although Knights were a little bit lower in society, with the amount of land they had, they were pretty wealthy.

Nobles wore clothes that displayed bright colors. Most noble wear was made of velvet, silk, and damask. Nobles were pretty rich, so they wore silk and linen as undergarments. Women wore high headdresses that were shaped in many shapes. During the Middle Ages, many mothers and children died while birthing, so it was dangerous to have kids. If a healthy child was born, he was baptized and cared for until age seven. Marriages were arranged, so there was never any room for love. While in adulthood, many nobles spent most of their time engaging in falconry and hunting. Women did not have many rights.

The Kings and Queens had a large amount of influence on the people they ruled. They only answered to the societal welfare. Even though they had power over the people, they did not have all the power. They still had to obey the pope. But other than also having the Pope in power, the King was in complete control under the feudal system. He owned all the land in the country and decided on who leased the land. He typically allowed Lords and Nobles to keep track/ lease the land for him. But before that, they would have to swear an oath of fealty at all times.

In the midieval times, religion was the most important thing. Because of this, the Pope had much power over everyone. The Pope was the religious leader of the Catholic Church. He had even more power than the king in the medieval hierarchy. He had the right to banish anyone, or excommunicate, from attending the church. Because medieval citizens were very religious, this was a very large deal. People thought that if they did not go to church, they could live in Hell for the rest of their lives.
