Hi everybody! My name is Simona, I'm from Italy and I work as a special needs teacher in an upper secondary school with 14-19 year students. I usually help students with some kind of disability but always more frequently foreign students attend our school, so they can be considered as some kind of BES (students with special educational needs). They often are adopted children or their family has come to Italy to work. We also host in our classes foreign students for international exchange programs.

I teach in a small town, situated in a quite big italian island, Sardinia. So far we hadn't known closely migrants issue yet but recently we have. There are a lot of boys wandering in the streets and unfortunately none of them attend school yet. Not yet, but I suppose it will soon.
Nevertheless, there is a wonderful experience of integration and hope, the local "Pagi" football team, exclusively made up of migrants

Why address cultural diversity in schools?
Cultural diversity is something similar to individual diversity. We are all different! We are different in terms of skills, abilities, personal biographies, aptitudes, interests and so on... Cultural diversity is a great benefit because it can force us to consider even our non foreign students as individuals... Maybe sometimes we forget it!

Unfortunately young people have often prejudices, due to lack of experience and to the influence of the adults, especially nowadays, when migrants issue is so debated.
Apart from thinking skills, feelings and emotions are also crucial to help students become acquainted with cultural diversity and get in deeper touch with foreign students.
