I would commence with a collection and review of the existing information and data (#1 in the Components of a Preliminary Survey), specifically the study of the topographical and land use maps. This would give me a greater understanding of the general area surrounding the lake and the impact of human and agricultural practices surrounding the lake. Consequently, I would have gathered much information as to the kind of discharge made into the lake (this will assist in my further Field Evaluation of the water quality of the lake).

I would suggest carrying out a desk study on already existing literature about the lake. This provides information on the water quality, impact of human activity at the catchment and hydrology. To me this is decisive on what the monitoring programme would generate data on, given that the intended use of the water is known.

Objective: To determine whether recreational use, such as swimming and boating, in a small lake, presents a risk to the health of the users.

My preliminary survey will include water quality data analysis / review, to see how safe the water is for recreational use (e.g. presence of Cr6+ wouldn’t be good for humans as it is toxic and causes skin rash) and if there are any human activities around passing contaminants into the lake. Water quality data review would be the first thing, because if the water is contaminated, it means water cannot be used for recreational purposes. If water is good, second thing is data review of hydro-logical
measurement (Flow rate and depth) to see if boating and swimming is possible. Influence of meteorological conditions on the lake would be part of field survey as winds may cause waves which makes it hard for swimming and canoeing / boating making the lake a hazard to human health.

Data review of water quality test results > hydrology review > field survey of meteorological conditions’ influence to lake.

In this scenario, I will firstly suggest that we review available data on the existing lake (if any). Consult land-use maps to ascertain information on the sought of activities being carried out in the area around the lake; conduct interview with citizens (people) living around the lake for any relevant information. These will provide clues for further investigation.

It would be necessary to check for available data such as baseline information when the project was commenced and then identify the possible variables that could have been affected with these activities. Identification of possible contaminants that can be discharged from the boats e.g diesel, petrol, oils, waste. There is also need to ascertain the levels at which these parameters become a cause of concern and whether the required detection limits can then be reached during laboratory testing.
