Flat Stanley is children's chapter book that is often used to communication arts as well as social studies. In generic lessons, students make a "Flat Stanley" doll and it is mailed around the world and information is mailed back to the class.
Mrs. Cohen transformed this lesson by having students create a podcast after reading the book. This transformation allowed for students to reach a global audience but in a technological manner.
Students chose destinations to talk about in their podcast and consequently they researched these destinations.
One of the main points that stood out to me was that Mrs. Cohen was learning this new technology and strategy along with her students. The students were struck by her honesty and seemed to be more engaged because their teacher was learning with them. This lesson allowed students to practice and develop many skills such as communication, technology, and critical thinking.

This strategy allows students to learn about history through writing and music of folk songs. This strategy is very useful when teaching history because it gives students a new lense to view history and the American Experience.
This strategy can be used for multiple eras of history and with multiple uses of technology. Students can use the internet to find and hear songs, as well as internet software to decipher and explain lyrics.
Music and history have always went hand in hand, but this strategy allows students to examine folk music and analyze its impact and relevance to American history.
