I have found that keeping the projects shorter, especially in this NTI environment, has been really helpful. You want to give them at least a week for a major project, but anything after that could slowly get pushed to the back of their mind by other class assignments. That happens sometimes. I have not done a lot of research projects. Since NTI is difficult to monitor, I usually provide the sources for the students.
