I have had similar issues. I have found that keeping the projects shorter, especially in this NTI environment, has been really helpful. You want to give them at least a week for a major project, but anything after that could slowly get pushed to the back of their mind by other class assignments. Also, I'm not sure if you have already, but incorporating time in class to work on it where they can ask you questions have proved helpful to me, but only sometimes.

I think a lot of students felt a bit overwhelmed with the project. That happens sometimes. I have not done a lot of research projects. Since NTI is difficult to monitor, I usually provide the sources for the students. Then, they pull what is essential from the text.
