Maren's message that social media needs us (HE) was something I've been thinking a lot about since her keynote. It gave me confidence that my Twitter account is worthwhile sharing with students, and encouraging them to be actively involved in. Thank you Maren for an inspiring and morale-boosting keynote.

Maren gave us all much needed permission to celebrate and recognise the impact that our social media has on our own identities and that of our colleagues and students. The value of social media can often be misunderstood and Maren's keynote reminded me of the importance of what we do. Thank you for being a role model for openness, innovation and community. It is much appreciated!

I really appreciated that almost the first message from Maren in the keynote was about being honest and creating an environment where we could all share our experiences and receive constructive feedback. That message set the tone for the day and gave us permission to have those, sometimes quite revealing, conversations about our existing practice and develop a way forward. Thank you for giving your time Maren and for setting the tone of the day so wonderfully.

Maren has a wonderful gift of being able to convey the often complex in a way that is inclusive. I loved the way she included the interlinking online communities associated with ALT and shared examples of how effectively they use social media to openly share good practice. Equally Maren also got us to think critically, and this led to a rich discussion during questions which highlighted the value and importance of continuing these conversations with our students and peers in our own universities. Thank you Maren.

Maren delivered a current, precise and thought provoking keynote which set the tone for the day. Maren covered many topics/themes during her speech, two of which:

1. She eloquently conveyed that social media is not just a tool to take and share, but to be a giver in sharing openly about our practices and having more meaningful connections and relationships, that will develop and shape our professionalism - defining our identity.

2. Maren encouraged us to own our digital space, via your own domain (website) where you can have better control over your data and content - not relying on other providers to have your long term interests. However, she stated that "social media needs us" empowering us with the responsibility to move things forward.

Finally, Maren does not just encourage and preach openness, but she practices it throughout her professionalism and shares it openly via her social media channels. Enabling others to learn from what has and not worked, as well as an inspiration source.

Maren's keynote for me and mainly elements that resonated. The biggest one though was openness, and more specifically the relevance sharing on reflections and experience in leadership. Fitting with the event as well was the discussion on social media and person ownership of our digital space. The point about those the event take responsibility to move social media in HE forward was particularly though provoking. Thank you Maren.

A conference that was not initially on my list of "usual conferences and or seminars" to go has turned out to be "a conference to look out for in the calendar year". Maren's keynote has opened my thinking of using social media more effectively. The way it enhances your professional portfolio to embedding this innovative technology into academic learning. The enthusiasm and passion she has engages the audience to be on this journey with her, taking us through the challenges and barriers she faces and getting us to know how to jump over those hurdles. As a relatively fresh graduate, (if I can still say so) is something that I think more students will want to hear and benefit from. A story that continuous to be written and a story that I would like to develop too with our career aspirations. You have inspired us that there is more life in using social media that just the odd weird random conversations (though I think is what makes us "human" online in 2D). Thank you for inspiring us Maren!

(Believe you me, I am more than just a sheep #BaaanedictIsMoreThanASheep) The way I get to network and "meet" people who I never thought I would. Big and important things were discussed that day, and were eloquently captured in Maren's keynote. Embracing open is something I am working toward in my own practice and I will be considering Maren's reflections as I continue on my way.

I was inspired when listening to Marens keynote speech and the key parts that resonated with me was positivity and openness. The reminder that we, as educational developers and learning technologists, are perfectly placed to encourage and adopt a critical view of social media and other technologies to support learning. In a time where many are turning away from social media, it is important the we are there. Considering and extolling the positive aspects of this unique space, which this conference exemplifies. But also working in the open. I was struck by the candour of her openness of approach to managing a team and blogging about its ups and downs. Not something I am currently brave enough to do, but it something value as can learn from this open practice and deeply appreciate the bravery involved in doing this. Keep up the good work of being an excellent role model for the sector.

In fact the title of Maren's keynote pretty much sums up how I think about Maren - A true member of the community, an ambassador for equality and an open practitioner in every sense of the word. Everyone should have a Maren :) Thank you x

I was inspired my Maren’s fantastic key note 🔑 📝 at #SocMedHE18, I respected the honesty in the key points that she delivered, in particular taking the time to switch off SM..... something I should do more of! Another aspect which I particularly liked was the emphasis on the power of the hashtag # before during and after an event/conference. The conference/event is not where these conversations should start and finish. Continued use of a # keeps these conversations going, building, strengthening and creating a community.
One take away messsge for us all is to think carefully about is the curation of our material online, in fact Maren highlighted that “a domain of one’s own can provide control and continuity” perhaps we should all think about hosting our own content on our own platforms thus guaranteeing longevity of our own content, something I hadn’t thought about before 😳🤦🏼‍♀️! Maren thank you for such an inspiring, fantastic keynote!
