British Literature by Devon Wilkinson

I have always found it the job of artists and authors to put into words, or put into a visual, the truth of life. Their job is to remind readers and viewers the truths that society leads us to forget over time.

Artist and writers alike, create based on distinct themes and truths. These themes and truths are depicted in many other works, meaning that their ideas are not new. I love being about to seem similar struggles between society today and society over 200 years ago. You will notice that I like to compare the works of artists from a different time period to creations of modern day.

Heaney writes on the destruction and devastation of Northern Ireland in 1969. Heaney uses his poems to ensure those who were sacrificed and those who suffered are never
forgotten.

Ukranian sculptor Alexandr Milov created this piece titled "Love." I find relations between this piece and multiple works we has read this semester. Referring to "BrideShead Revisited," there was a certain standard that people followed in order to coexist with society. However, on the inside people are completely different. Take Charles and Julia, both of them seem to have married for the sake of connivence but still manage to "see" each other outside of their marriages. It is that naive child in all of us that makes humans stray from what is expected of us.

"I did not go to Europe; her treasures were safe, too safe, swaddled in expert care, obscured by reverence." Quoted from Brideshead Revisted. Waugh exemplifies his point that something that is always present, isn't as beautiful as that in which it's time is limited. The Night-blooming cereus is a flower that only blooms ones a year and it is thought that this is one of the most beautiful flowers because of its short life. This flower illustrates Waugh's point.

I picture the moment that Charles met Sebastian as a single snow flake landing on a hill. The snow fall becomes heavy after the first until the hill is completely engulfed in a blanket of white. All of the snowflakes that make up that blanket were brought on all because one snowflake fell first. Everything that Sebastian has led him to in his life comes crashing down when he loses Julia and everything else dear to him. Despite the destruction, the snow from the avalanche has created a blank slate and a chance for a new beginning.

I couldn't help but find a great amount of similarities between Ian McEwan as a writer and Schiele as an artist. Schiele created work that was extremely vaguer for the time period he lived in. McEwan wrote the novel Atonement later then when the actual novel takes place but McEwan really brings out the struggle of having a creative mind in a time when it was taboo to do so. I think of all the troubles Schiele went through because he was true to what he created. Briony displays anxiety and confusion as being a creative child growing up in a world that wants her to fit into a box with the rest of society.
