Frankly, I have rarely planned, assigned, and assessed a group activity that is truly equitable. So, grading may be heavily dependent on the process rather than the product. Further, typical issues such as attendance and discipline problems often make group activities such in title only

There always seems to be one student that wants to dominate the discussion and work even though there are clear roles assigned. Students are not used to relying on their peers to learn.

My biggest challenge has been assigning the outliers to groups -- those who are significantly above or below grade level. The above want to do everything, and the below don't know what to do. Both often spend a significant amount of time outside of the classroom with SPED services. Also, making sure the work is being divided evenly among students can be an issue.

The two challenges that I often face are when one or two students take over all of the work because they feel their group mates are inferior, or when the "inferior" students decide to do nothing because they don't like the assignment and then the others have to pick up the slack and do it themselves.

Challenges of Group Work:
Some students do all of the work while others are less motivated. There are some students who dominate the entire project because they don't take into consideration that all students can contribute. Also, I have found that students who are absent a lot cause issues for their group because the weight becomes unbalanced when everyone is not there to play their parts.
