It takes more effort in my opinion to stay engaged and make sure you are learning everything you can from the class. This quote sums up my thoughts about what you get out of a class.

Brittney Mohnke: In my own classroom, I have seen firsthand that student involvement is essential in order to make learning last. This applies to adult learners as well. We have to be as involved as possible in order to get the most out of this course. By sharing quality posts and responding to our fellow classmates in a way that continues a conversation, we will make the most of this opportunity to grow as an educator.

I love this quote for two reasons. Firstly, it was made by my favorite person in all of history, the person I would love to have met: Winston Churchill. Churchill was not only a great leader, he was also extremely talented in other areas. For example, he was an amazing artist, paining over 200 pictures during his time, including famously for Roosevelt in Morocco. This quote also reminds me that we need to shoot for the stars when we are teaching. If we set boundaries on what we think students are capable of learning they will never be able to reach their full potential.

I feel if you can change a students attitude about your class or learning in general, you as a teacher have already won half of the battle. I picked this quote from Pat Riley and I feel it goes well with this class. When I think of the little boy I will be doing my case study on, just keeping his attitude positive about reading and making sure he is putting forth his best effort will help he continues to learn to read.

I chose this quote because when you work with children, you have to work hard every day to keep them engaged. When working with adults, I have found that this is also a challenge. I know when I go to some of the "professional development" my district provides, I find my mind wandering and that I need extra breaks because we are sitting for so long. In an online class this is especially difficult because it is harder to get those "hooks" that really catch a person's attention.

Paul Kennedy:
I actually went online line to find a quote from Michael Jordan that I am sure most of us have seen before, the quote about missing 100% of the shots you don't take, leading the reader to believe that they must try and be prepared to fail and try again. In the quick process to find that quote, I found the quote attached below and quickly fell in love with it. I haven't seen it before and it nails the idea of engagement. A student (Us as adult learners and our students) must be actively engaged in learning, doing, touching, manipulating, creating, writing, or the learning process simply won't stick. If we learn to engage all of our students, we may be able to learn how to make sure none of them are able to get left behind as a spectator.

I love that we are finally addressing the "staleness" of our educational system. In my ideal classroom, this is what I feel the engagement policy should be. We should begin to celebrate differences and provide opportunities for those differences to shine, which, in turn, expands the walls we have built for ourselves for decades. From the material we have read thus far, I feel open to sharing and excited about what I'll learn from others, the ideas, suggestions, and input that will inspire me to be a better educator.

This is the quote from my email signature. It nicely sums up my attitude towards life and the attitude I encourage in my students. The next 3-4 weeks are extremely busy, but I will make an effort to participate. I am a mom, wife, and teacher first; then a student. (until performances are done, then it will be mom, wife, student!)

This quote reflects my understanding of learning and teaching in general and also relates to the engagement policy. This quote talks about how learning is a choice because we choose to learn - in the engagement policy it talks about how learning will go hand in hand with a students willingness to engage. If a student makes the choice to engage - they will always learn something! Little steps are important and valued when working with children and getting them engaged and excited about learning is the first crucial step!
