- The bull at the top left of the artwork represents brutality and darkness. The bull's gaze is cold and dethatched. This bull might be representing Fascism or Francisco Franco. The tail of the bull represents the smoking remains of Guernica.
- The woman below the bull is holding a dead child and she is screaming towards the heavens while her breasts that once fed her child are exposed. Her eyes are in the shape of tears. She is a secular virgin and child tainted by war.
- The dead soldier that is beneath the woman represents futility and hope. His disjointed parts are across the floor. His disjointed hand is holding a broken sword which represents failure from which grows a white flower. This flower symbolizes of remembrance and hope. In his other hand, there are scars which represents the ultimate sacrifice.
- In between the bull and horse, there is a dove with a pained expression and broken body which represents in Picasso point of view, that all the peace has been destroyed.
- The light bulb may represent the eye of god that is overlooking the chaos during war or it may represent the technology that destroyed Guernica.
- The screaming horse that is at the center of the artwork is collapsing due to his wound but its head is reaching upwards as it is struggling to live. Picasso painted a horse like this as he saw the horse as the people of Guernica.
- The woman that is trapped in the building at the right side of the artwork is pleading at the sky either to God or to the German planes to stop the destruction. Whereas behind her there are destructions of buildings due to burning.
- Below the burning woman there is woman that is holding onto her bleeding knee as she is trying to stop the blood with her hand. She is looking very hopeful towards the oil lamp. This is because the oil lamp is the main source of light, not the light bulb and the oil light represents hope and it is strong enough to shed light across the artwork. It also represents the spirit of the Spanish Republic.

The artwork has a chaotic space and is crowded with many subject matters. This shows that the war was a chaotic time as there are many things going between the people of Guernica. The lines used in this artwork are mostly sharp lines which shows that it was an intense war. The shapes used are odd as they are not placed in a usual manner. For example, the eyes of the soldier and the legs of the woman at the bottom right of the artwork. It gives more emphasis towards the leg as it emphasis on the pain that she has to face due to her leg. The colour of the artwork used are basic white, grey and black as there is an absence of colour.

Picasso learnt painting and drawing from his father when he was a child. When Picasso was 13 years old, his skill level surpassed his father's and soon, Picasso gave up in doing his schoolwork and focused more during his school days doodling in his notebooks. In 1985, Picasso was 14 years old and his family moved to Barcelona, Spain. That was where he applied to the city's prestigious School of Fine Arts. Even though the school only accepts students several years his seniors, Picasso's entrance exam was so amazing that he was granted an exception and was admitted to the school. Either ways, Picasso chafed at the School of Fine Arts strict rules and formalities and started skipping classes so that he could lurk around the streets of a Barcelona and sketch the city scenes that he observes. In 1897, Picasso moved to Madrid when he was 16 years old to attend the Royal Academy of San Fernando. Once again, Picasso skipped classes as he was frustrated with his school's singular focus on classical subjects and techniques. In 1899, Picasso moved back to Barcelona and fell in with a crowd of artists and intellectuals who made their headquarters at a café called El Quatre Gats. With this, Picasso was inspired by the anarchists and radicals he met there and proceeded on stopping from classical methods which he was trained. He began to experiment art and began to be innovative.

There are more subject matters on the left side then the right side. The audience's eyes would start from the cup that is one the white cloth table as it has the most number of colours on it. Next, the eyes would go to the most contrasting subject matter which looks like a clump of ice cream. Above that there is a bowl that is tilted towards the child as the child is digging something out of it. Lastly the eyes would go to the child itself.
In this artwork there is a pattern of the colour blue and wavy lines which gives the artwork a smooth and cozy look. There is emphasis in this artwork in terms of colour. As you can see, there is a light source coming from the top left corner of the artwork. This allows the artist to make use of this source of light to paint white paint on the child and the items in front of it. With this colour it gives a contrast between the child and the background [ white - blue ]
