Fossil lab

Background: Fossils are traces of organisms that lived in the past.  When fossils are found, they are carefully excavated and then analyzed. We can tell when an organism lived by the age of the rocks it was found in. Analysis of fossils includes dating and careful observations of morphology, or the changes in physical characteristics, so that relations to other fossils or existing organisms can be determined.

In this lab you will be working with a fictitious organism of the genus Adventurian, You will categorize Adventurian fossils by similarities in morphology and age in an attempt to place a mystery fossil of unknown origin in the correct place in the evolution of the species

Procedure: 

  1. Each image represents a fossil of a fictional animal
  2. Each fossil shows the time period in which the animal lived. Sort the images into their correct time periods, setting the mystery fossil aside. As in the real fossil record, some fossils will be "missing". The oldest two are sorted for you.
  3. As you are sorting the fossils by time, also group them vertically by morphology, ie appearance. Those fossils that appear to be the same (or close to the same) as the fossils preceding them should be placed in a vertical line
  4. During certain periods, the fossils will split into two branches. In other words, one fossil from that period will show one type of change, and another fossil will show a different change. When this happens, place the fossils side by side in the appropriate time period. From this point on you will have two lineages.
  5. Once you have placed all the fossils in the correct times and grouped them together into the right families and branches, attempt to put the mystery fossil in the correct branch and time. 
  6. Discuss with your group why you believe the mystery fossil belongs where it does. Why did you pick that family and that time?
  7. When you are done, move all the images except the bottom two back to the top so that the next group can play in padlet. Scramble them all up so that the puzzle is jumbled again, setting the mystery
