I believe that the following quote sums it all up, "Sometimes when our students are struggling, they forget all that they’ve accomplished. It helps to create a track record of breaking your own mold, or at least other people’s idea of that mold." By showing my teachers that through written reflections their students will not only find encouragement over time, they will find that they are seeing success in their own learning is a huge part of my coaching strategy.

I think about my teachers at a particular campus and see that written reflection can be beneficial to my inexperienced teachers in order for them to see what the students choose to highlight as what they do know about content, and identify areas of need in order to create a plan of action to proceed further. The teachers are not aware of student needs. The students maybe able to assist through their writing.

"We remember losses far longer than we remember successes. Keeping a concrete list of successes is a constant visual reminder of progress. " I will share this quote with teachers and have them create a victory list of their successes and debrief the process. If they feel it is useful the suggestion is perhaps students can benefit from the process as well.

WE both liked the Victory List because it highlights the student's successes.

Also doing the journal entry at the end of class of "one thing I learned.." allows for them to keep track of their success and what they have learned daily.

A good way to summarize their learning would be to do a Friday Reflection on all the topics/concepts they learned that week and then that month.

I can see many ways creating a "Victory List" can help students improve their behavior in class, build self confidence and celebrate little successes.

I will encourage teachers to have journal entry frequently. To support this task, I need to model/collaborate to make sure teachers :

Provide enough wait-time for students to reflect when responding to inquiries. And make sure to also provide time to go over and share their reflections either to their shoulder partners or whole class.

Provide sentence stems is necessary.

Ask questions that seek reasons and evidence. Use of good prompting questions and sentence stems can encourage responses.

Provide some explanations to guide students' thought processes during explorations.

I will start encouraging teachers to allow students to talk about teachers they thought were great and why...so teachers can apply that to those students in their classroom. In addition, I believe teachers will benefit from having students reflect over their learning so use those reflections to determine whether they (the teachers) were successful in teaching content and concepts.

I like the idea of a victory list. Teachers could incorporate this idea in their classrooms, teachers and students can keep a victory list per class period to discuss their glows and glows over lessons, class culture, and aspirations. Teachers can also write class letters to the class as well, and throughout the year the class can share their victory list and read their teacher's letter.
