GET OUT Padlet 1 by Tyke O'Brien

Answer ONE of the following questions in pairs: 1.	Eugenics is: the study of how to arrange reproduction within a human population to increase the occurrence of heritable characteristics regarded as desirable. Eugenics was increasingly discredited as unscientific and racially biased during the 20th century, especially after the adoption of its doctrines by the Nazis in order to justify their treatment of Jews, disabled people, and other minority groups. Where and how is Eugenics it foreshadowed and featured in the film? 2.Define the menace in its various forms in the film. How does Jordan Peele escalate menace? Where do you see foreshadowing or the Chekov’s gun principle? 3. What race-based horror tropes are subverted & even reversed in the film? What about character tropes? 4.	How would you describe the “sunken place”? What does it mean, in a metaphorical/allegorical sense?

I would describe the sunken place as a deep void of powerlessness. A place of subdued despair where one cannot express oneself or be one's voice. The metaphorical symbolism of the sunken place is a position of oppression where any free will or voice is taken away, creating a state of one being silenced in a world that seeks to control them.

In my opinion, the “sunken place” in Get Out is a haunting metaphor for systemic oppression and silenced identity. It represents the psychological prison where marginalized voices are trapped, they are seen but not heard. In other words, conscious but powerless. It's the loss of agency that comes with racism, where control is stripped away and the self is buried beneath the expectations and domination of others. The sunken place is this deep prison. Being in the sunken place means you are stuck in the silence of being aware but unable to act, scream, or escape. That’s what makes it so chilling.

The theme of eugenics is foreshadowed throughout the movie Get Out multiple times, especially during the party. Many guests came up to Chris asking about his abilities and genetic makeup, hinting towards the fact that they saw him for his characteristics rather than as a human being. Jeremy also brings up Chris's genetic makeup during the dinner, which, in retrospect, hinted towards the family's values, which we would later learn were very closely tied to eugenics. Towards the end of the movie, we learn about how the Armitages run a group called the Order of the Coagula, which is an organization that allows white people to live in bodies that they see as genetically superior, further representing this theme of the racial biases and eugenics in the film.

Looking back, Jordan Peele made the foreshadows really obvious. A few that I can recall was when Mr.Artimage pointed at the basement and said something along the lines of “we get rid of black mole down there”. Chris’s comments about getting chased out of Rose’s house with a shotgun and ended up being how the movie ended. Things like these show the attention to detail that Peele put in this movie.

A couple of race-based horror tropes get changed up throughout the film. First of all, the idea of a black character dying first in the film is completely thrown out the window as all of the white characters die and Chris escapes and survives. Second, there is no white savior in this movie. The Armitage's are actually the villains, and so Chris doesn't need saving by them but needs to be saved from them. Finally, the trope of a black side character being simple comic relief is thrown away as well. It seems that Rod is just there to make people laugh, but he actually shows how smart he is throughout the movie, eventually saving Chris.

The sunken place is a terrifying mental space where Chris loses control of his body and is forced to watch in horror, unable to act or speak. The sunken place represents how oppression can silence individuals and make them feel powerless and alone. It shows us the horror of systemic racism, where identity is taken away while they are used for other gain. The sunken place is a haunting metaphor for the feeling of being trapped, unable to speak or resist while you are controlled by others.

We see the entire story through Chris's perspective, and looking back, Jordan Peele does a wonderful job of escalating menace throughout the story. We can see it clearly in the party scene where everyone is a little too friendly to him, and it is amplified even further when they all pause their conversations once he goes upstairs. This implies that the whole party is a facade. We also see their motivations become clearer at the silent auction... where they bid on Chris. My favorite foreshadowing, however, is from Rose's delivery of her lines. In hindsight, it is clear that it's all an act, but in the moment, we can't help but believe every word. June is chillingly talented at acting as a loving girlfriend and being a stone cold bitch.

I consider Peele's Get Out to be a masterclass of foreshadowing and menace. Throughout the entire movie, there are various indicators of the evil that lies ahead. For instance, the basement is introduced early in the house scenes, where the viewer is already made aware that something is not right. Also, something that I picked up on was the various instances where Rose's affiliation was alluded to. This majorly includes Chris' interaction with the 'hypnotised' African American man working outside, where he gives a sly comment on Rose's attractiveness, hinting that he was a past lover of Rose, just as Chris is. In terms of menace, you can close your eyes and pick a random time stamp, and it will likely have some escalation of peril, whether it is simply the introduction of all the racist white people and their comments on Chris and the related, or when it is revealed that Missy has the ability to completely knock you unconscious, sentencing you to the "Sunken Place". Lastly, I think the concept of being trapped in your own body, voiceless and powerless, while symbolic of systematic oppression, is the definition of menace.

We see a lot of menace throughout the film, but most notably, the microaggressions he gets from the family. They seem like a liberal white family, except that they completely disregard the fact that all their slaves are black. Peele escalates the menace through Chris's awkward conversations with Georgina and the other guy, and then the camera flash is when you realize something's off. We see foreshadowing through the deer, where it goes from the hunted to the hunter, and through the camera flash, since it ultimately helps him escape.

One of the horror tropes that Get Out subverts is where the “black guy always dies first”. The character that the audience expects to be killed off in the beginning, not only survives and brcomes the main character, but also the “final girl/guy”. This breaks the stereotypes of having the character that typically lives on being a white woman (like in Scream). Also, the film introduces a new type of horror. One where the villain isn’t a monster or any physical element, it’s an idea and actions. The monster in Get Out is racism, which is terrifying in a completely new way.

The various forms of menace come from Peele using the more standard forms of horror movie menace along with aspects of the real world. From the beginning he uses the run rabbit song the create menace and tension but also the black man alone in a white neighborhood. This creates more tension than just the song alone could because it draws from our knowledge of horror aspects of the real world to put us on edge about the situation.

I also at the party when the Andre Hayworth character is spinning around talking to the other guests like he is showing off a new body as an example of foreshadowing. Also during that party Chris is less observant of warning signs because he seems to be a bit conditioned to white people being a little bit weird or racist towards him making menace by having him be a little accepting while the viewer can start to have it revealed that something is really wrong. Also I though the lack of super intense screaming or anything instead a lot of blank stares or low calm calculating voices added menace to the scenes where the content of them is very intense but the characters react calmly that was unsettling.

Namely when the father gives Chris a house tour and talks about the Olympics, and when the brother talks to Chris about MMA. Both instances emphasize the physical/genetic advantages they believe Black people have.

The sunken place is a metaphor for dominance, inaction, and complicity. The 'place' itself is a nightmare-like representation of unconsciousness; still able to experience sensory stimuli but only vicariously. This is where we see notions of inaction and complicity. Though the sunken place itself is a direct result of Chris's mental conditioning, to him it represents/recreates the experience of sitting still while a life is in danger/slipping away. It is also a metaphor for dominance of the armitages over others/whites over blacks in this film, being a 'prison' where the hypnotized go, tortured until their death.
