The Islands were first sighted in 1592. However, English landing did not occur until 1690. The first settlement was made in 1764 by the French. Two years later, the islands were turned over to Spain. Since then, bitter territory disputes have occurred between the English and Spanish, English and Argentinians, and many others until England put a naval fort in 1833. In 1982, the Argentine forces invaded the islands and overpowered the small garrison. Within days, the United Kingdom sent a special forces group, and after a very organized, but fierce, seven weeks, the UK forces won the islands back. Until 2013, the Argentine's haggled the UK about whether the islands should secede. A vote in 2013 stated that 99.8% of the people on the island would rather have UK protection. (This photograph was taken during the Falkland Islands War.)

The Falkland Islands are a territory of the UK, but have been claimed by Argentina more than once. The Government type is a Parliamentary Democracy, for it is self-governing. The monarchy of the UK is hereditary, but a chief executive (Barry Rowland) is appointed by the governor (Nigel Philips), who is appointed by the monarch (Queen Elizabeth II). In a way, the queen decides everything.
