There is no denying that the tourism industry in the world has developed steadily. For a better understanding of tourism’s future, it is crucial to examine the current landscape and consider how the latest technological advancements may affect the industry.

Tourism is a very large service industry with many endeavours. Tourism not only creates jobs and provides jobs but also brings in money and revenue. A study which was done by the Tourism Policy Research Unit found that tourism boosts the GDP of every country by 8% on average. Additionally, more and more people are going on vacation every year, and this trend is not showing signs of slowing down despite being in the middle of a global pandemic. Similar to other industries, tourism has lots of pros and cons.

There are many merits that tourism brings to us such as boosting the economy, giving the destination a sense of place and helping preserve natural resources and cultural traditions. Other advantages of tourism are as follows:

Tourism brings in money – Because people from over the world travel to different countries, tourism brings in money. It provides jobs in hotels, restaurants and other tourism-related industries. Besides, tourism also helps sustain services so that tourists can enjoy their vacations even more.

· Tourism provides jobs – Tourism not only often generates jobs in various fields such as hospitality and agriculture industries but also helps to develop the housing market, which leads to economic growth and job opportunities in other industries.

Stimulates growth of a country – Many countries offer incentives for investment like tax breaks or low rates of corporate tax which allow companies to invest their money into real estate, transportation, and other forms of infrastructure necessary for promoting tourism.

Incentive to preserve the natural environment - By creating incentives for people to preserve nature and the environment, tourism can help preserve nature and the environment. Because the destruction of such areas inevitably leads to a decline in tourism

Tourism promotes international connections – Tourism creates new friendships and builds favourable relationships between different countries. By travelling, tourists are able to gain a deeper understanding of their destination Helps to put nations on the global map – Many countries have started to invest in tourism to make it easier for people to travel abroad on an individual or business level.
On the other hand, tourism also has some negative impacts on the local economy, and environment or even causes pandemic and geopolitical situations:
    Can cause environmental damage –
The result of an attempt to find a photo opportunity is that tourists are often responsible for deforestation and over-exploitation of natural resources. Destroying habitats could lead to the extinction of endangered species, which could have adverse consequences on biodiversity.

Can cause cultures to clash – Tourism creates a clash between cultures which may cause the destruction of existing communities. Therefore, it is important to respect local customs and traditions.

Mainly provides low-level jobs – These jobs mostly come as waiters, cleaners, bartenders…However, these are usually temporary jobs that don’t provide much opportunity for growth.

Seasonal Nature of tourism – Tourism usually peaks during the summer months when people come from other areas to vacation in a warmer climate. However, other places have this trend reversed. Regardless, the off-season usually results in decreased economic activity.

Small businesses are unable to keep up – Sometimes, the tourism industry in developing countries is owned by big foreign companies, which means that locals who depend on the income from tourism have to find other jobs in order to make money. This can cause unemployment and can negatively affect the economy.

Other key sectors of a country might be ignored – Over-reliance on the tourism industry can lead to a danger for the economy if it takes a hit from political situations, wars, global pandemics,…

One of the most important things about tourism is that it has positive and negative effects on a country. The positive effects are increasing income, helping to spread culture, and creating employment opportunities. On the other hand, there are negative effects such as environmental damage due to overpopulation, increased crime rates, and loss of resources.

Link: https://www.aplustopper.com/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-tourism/

Essay 1: Foreign visitors should pay more than local visitors for cultural and historical attractions. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

It is sometimes argued that tourists from overseas should be charged more than local residents to visit important sites and monuments. I completely disagree with this idea.

The argument in favor of higher prices for foreign tourists would be that cultural or historical attractions often depend on state subsidies to keep them going, which means that the resident population already pays money to these sites through the tax system. However, I believe this to be a very shortsighted view. Foreign tourists contribute to the economy of the host country with the money they spend on a wide range of goods and services, including food, souvenirs, accommodation, and travel. The governments and inhabitants of every country should be happy to subsidize important tourist sites and encourage people from the rest of the world to visit them.

If travelers realized that they would have to pay more to visit historical and cultural attractions in a particular nation, they would perhaps decide not to go to that country on holiday. To take the UK as an example, the tourism industry and many related jobs rely on visitors coming to the country to see places like Windsor Castle or Saint Paul’s Cathedral. These two sites charge the same price regardless of nationality, and this helps to promote the nation’s cultural heritage. If overseas tourists stopped coming due to higher prices, there would be a risk of insufficient funding for the
maintenance of these important buildings.

In conclusion, I believe that every effort should be made to attract tourists from overseas, and it would be counterproductive to make them pay more than local residents.

(269 words)

Essay 2: Many developing countries are currently expanding their tourist industries. Why is this the case? Is it a positive or negative development?

In recent years, tourism has been booming on an unprecedented scale, with many developing countries gradually considering tourism as the mainstay of their economy. The main reason for this is the great income source it provides, and I strongly believe that it is a positive development with its downsides overshadowing the upsides. However, it may also have some drawbacks in some different nations.

There are two primary reasons for governments to expand and improve the tourism sector. Firstly, the expansion of this industry will bring in great revenue for emerging nations by generating a multitude of professional opportunities for inhabitants living in tourist destinations. This would be a contributing factor to a decrease in the unemployment rates. For example, a number of positions are available in restaurants and hotels. Accordingly, it is also deemed to reduce the crime rates in some inner-city areas. Secondly, these nations can seize a chance to have better trade relationships with others and introduce their local culture and landscapes to the world. They take action to utilize the potential that can be appreciated in their countries, such as an exotic beach, rare faunas and floras, and incredible mountains. Not only increasing the country's income but also making them exist in the tourism field among other countries. It impacts international relations among two or more countries to develop their tourism and hospitality industries as well.

However, this high-speed expansion of the traveling industry also has a negative influence. In some other developing countries where mass tourism prevails, this has become a catastrophe. A huge number of tourists flocking to an area in peak seasons, littering all over the place, and committing vandalism have resulted in environmental problems and the destruction of historical monuments and natural landmarks. The Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, for example, has been reported to suffer from irreversible damage as a result of the enormous number of visitors coming there to see the site every year. Moreover, another consequence of this trend that is worth mentioning is the depletion of natural resources. An explanation is that there is a need for local authorities to destroy forests and overexploit land resources to accommodate the invasion of tourists.

In conclusion, the tourism industries are expanding in flourishing states owing to their profitable economic sector. I am absolutely convinced that this expansion is a force for good if it develops in control of the government without damaging the environment.

(404 words)
