1) Gender is a vital ingredient in the formation of one’s unique variation of language. This difference primarily stems from the different social expectations and attitudes that different genders face, and the different linguistic practices one must employ to achieve prestige in that gender group.
2) However the degree to which gender expectations affect one’s speech is highly dependent on the social context they find themselves in and the individual identity they wish to portray.
3) Whilst gender is undeniably a factor which is responsible for differences in language use, the influence of other factors, such age and sexuality, must also be noted as covert norms are employed by speakers to gain prestige within the group and establish group solidarity.
4) Similar to gender based differences, social context also dictates the prevalence of covert linguistic norms as speakers belonging to different social groups face different attitudes and expectations depending on the situation.

The differences discourse management and lexis
between men and women can often be a result of the attitudes and expectations placed
on either gender. This may vary however depending on the context in which the
speaker finds themselves.

2.
Whilst gender is a large part of identity, age
