This was mainly due to them trying to force a society upon the Cambodians where everyone would be a farmer and be "equal".

There were many reports about the actions of the Khmer Rouge, and even US officials announced this. However, Southeast Asian countries disregarded this due to their lack of trust in the United States, especially after the Vietnam War. Also, despite the US announcing the actions of the Khmer Rouge, they did little to nothing, especially because of their loss in the Vietnam War. So, we believe this lack of action made the results of the Cambodian genocide worse.

Anything the United States announced, they didn't take seriously. If they took these statements seriously, they could've helped going against the Khmer Rogue, the consequences might not have been as bad.

The regime aimed to create a classless agrarian society, forcibly relocating millions from cities to labor camps in the countryside where they endured forced labor, starvation, torture, and execution. Intellectuals, ethnic minorities, religious adherents, and anyone perceived as an enemy were targeted, leading to widespread suffering and the destruction of societal structures. The genocide ended when Vietnam invaded in 1979, but its aftermath saw continued conflict and a long struggle for justice, with trials for Khmer Rouge leaders beginning decades later.
