A red blood cell is an animal cell. Osmosis happens due to the movement of water molecules from a place of high water potential to a place of low water potential through a partially permeable membrane. When a red blood cell is immersed in a concentrated sugar solution, the which has a lower water potential than the cell, the water moves out of the cell through the partially permeable plasma membrane. The cell shrinks and shrivels due to the outgoing water flow.

the concentrated sugar solution has lower water potential, while the red blood cell has higher water potential. because of this difference in water potential, and because osmosis goes down the water potential gradient, water molecules will move out of the red blood cell to the concentrated sugar solution surrounding it. this will continue until both regions are of the same water potential. this process leads to the red blood cell shrinking due to it losing water.

it shrinks, because there is a lower water potential on the outside of the cell and higher water potential inside. Osmosis happens from high to low water potential therefore the water inside the Red-blood cell will go through the partially permeable membrane and to the solution.

When placed in a concentrated sugar solution, the red blood cell will become shriveled. This is because osmosis is a process in which the particles will move from a region with higher water potential to lower water potential across a selectively permeable membrane until an equilibrium is reached. However, due to the high concentration of the sugar solution, this signifies that it has a lower water potential as compared to the contents inside the red blood cell and therefore, this will cause the contents of the red blood cell to move across the membrane towards the concentrated sugar solution because of osmosis, causing it to shrivel up.
