District 12 is located at a region called Appalachia.
The Appalachian Mountains are made up of many different mountain ranges. They are old mountains formed about
300 000 000 years ago. They are quite low due to erosion that has eroded their sharp peaks and made them into rolling mountains and hills. The Appalachian region also contains rivers and fertile plateaus. In many rivers, coal, oil and gas can be found in rock layers. Many of the rivers are a form of transportation.

More than 25 million Americans live in the Appalachian region—a 205,000 square-mile area that covers portions of 12 states and all of West Virginia. And while Appalachia is a distinct part of the United States, the region is far from homogeneous, covering both rural areas and major metropolitan areas such as Pittsburgh. There are also a lot of hillbillies
(an unsophisticated country person, associated originally with the remote regions of the Appalachians.)

The Appalachians are old. A look at rocks exposed in today's Appalachian mountains reveals elongate belts of folded and thrust faulted marine sedimentary rocks, volcanic rocks and slivers of ancient ocean floor. Strong evidence that these rocks were deformed during plate collision. The birth of the Appalachian ranges, some 480 million years ago, marks the first of several mountain building plate collisions that culminated in the construction of the supercontinent Pangea with the Appalachians near the center.
