The Starry Night. Vincent van Gogh. 1889 ce. Oil on canvas. I choose to re-create The Starry Night because it has been one of my favorite pieces of art, even before enrolling in AP Art History. I love the blue swirls, glowing yellow moon, shining stars, and minuscule brush strokes evident in this piece. I also got to visit the van Gogh exhibit in Charlotte, NC a couple of months ago! I started constructing my re-creation by drawing a black cypress tree onto a blue sheet of construction paper. Spiral Jetty. Great Salt Lake, Utah, U.S. Robert Smithson. 1970 ce. Earthwork: mud, precipitated salt crystals, rocks, and water coil. I choose to re-create Spiral Jetty because it was incredibly fascinating to me. Before taking AP Art History, I was oblivious to the fact that artwork could take place outside of a traditional canvas. Studying this earthwork heightened my curiosity about both nature and the outdoor world. To construct my re-creation, I began with beans I found in my kitchen. I then laid out various beans in a spiral pattern. Maize Cobs. Inka. c.1440–1533 ce. Sheet metal/repoussé, metal alloys. I choose to re-create the Maize Cobs because my friends and I had a running joke the entirety of the year about this work of art. We all thought it was hilarious that the College Board was requiring us to study metal corn cobs! I also admired how realistic the Maize Cobs were. They were life-sized and mimicked the appearance of ripe corn ready to be harvested. To re-create this work of art, I bent pieces of aluminum foil and shaped them into what was supposed to resemble a cob of corn. Polychrome woodblock print; ink and color on paper. I choose to re-create this work of art because I have been familiar with it for quite some time. I even have a t-shirt with this wave print that I regularly wear. I love the cool tones in this ukiyo-e print. I also think it's neat that Hokusai moved away from the tradition of making images of courtesans/actors and instead, focused on the daily life of Japanese people. I constructed my re-creation of The Great Wave by using blue yarn to create a wave shape. Improvisation 28 (second version). Vassily Kandinsky. 1912 ce. Oil on canvas. I choose to re-create this art piece because I was fond of the bright colors and abstract lines present in this painting. The artist strived to have the viewer respond to a painting in a way that one would respond to an abstract musical composition like a concerto, sonata, or symphony. I re-created this oil painting by using sidewalk chalk on the cement in my driveway. The various lines of chalk I drew were thought to resemble the thick, vigorous brushstrokes present in Improvisation 28.
