Summary: This passage talks about how the boy is dreaming about the day his dad had gotten arrested by the FBI. At midnight the FBI came for his dad. The Christmas tree was still up and they came to his front door knocking for his dad to come with them. He sees his dad wear his night clothes going in the a black car with the men.
Significant Passage: "He had never seen his father leave the house without his hat on before. That was what had troubled him the most. No hat. And those slippers: battered and faded, with the rubber soles curling up at the edges. If only they had let him put on his shoes then it all might have turned out differently. (Otsuka 74)
Analysis: The boy sees his father being taken away by the FBI and what bothers him the most is what the dad was wearing. His SLIPPERS. He is afraid what what he looks like and how he appears to the white people specially the FBI.

Summary: The boy was day dreaming about his father and imagined him to be this outlaw from America wearing cowboy boots and riding a white horse.
Significant Passage: "He'd be thinking these things, and then the image would suddenly float up before him: his father, in his bathrobe and slippers, being led away across the lawn. Into the car; Papa-san." (Otsuka 83)
Analysis: The image of the cowboy who is an outlaw is very typical and pleasing to the boy where as when he is reminded of how his father had dressed he is ashamed all of a sudden and wants to not think about how his dad got taken away in slippers.

All three passages talk about how the boy is worried about his dads appearance and how he looks when he walked out. Because of the stigma and the propaganda that paint the Japanese as these dirty, uncivilized people and it is in full effect for the boy. His dad usually dresses very clean, and he always wears suits and a nice pair of shoes but he is taken away in his bathrobe and slippers. The boy is ashamed that his dad looks like a "typical Japanese" based all the propaganda and the negative connotation
of the Japanese at this time.
