It's about learning how to be a respectful person, showing that no matter what is going on in your life, anything is possible. Math is usually a subject alot of people dislike. I share with them each year that even if you dislike something doesn't mean you can't be successful and accomplish the goal. Math is about problem solving, learning how to overcome problems. I know that their parents want me to care for them, the same way that I care for Catelyne and Cade. I also learned much about myself as a single mom and felt a great sense of accomplishment working my way through a rigorous college curriculum. They dropped out and lived on the street because they didn't fit in and no one gave a 🤬 about whether they were successful or not. Especially if you were a student of color. I did my research paper on Alternative  Education and realized that there was a way to reach some, if not all, of the students. So I signed up to be an alternative teacher because I had the patience to try, and have been one ever since.
