Puberty brings out dramatic physical and mental change to an unprepared child.

The general purpose of sex education is to inform youth on topics including sex, sexuality and bodily development. Quality sex education can lead to better prevention in STDs and unwanted pregnancy.

Preventing teenage pregnancy is no mere task especially in this day and age. I believe that to prevent or even lessen teenage pregnancy, we must educate ourselves and our surroundings as to what sex is and the consequences it holds. Educating the younger generation must start at a very young age. In this day and age, kids get exposed to teen pregnancy at a very young age through the means of the internet and many other social platforms. By showing them what can happen and all the different paths teenagers could take if they get pregnant and how awful it can be for everyone, not just the teenager but also the families and the future child.

Sex education is high quality teaching and learning about a broad variety of topics related to sex and sexuality, exploring values and beliefs about those topics and gaining the skills that are needed to navigate relationships and manage one’s own sexual health. Sex education may take place in schools, in community settings, or online. Sex education should occur throughout a student’s grade levels, with information appropriate to students’ development and cultural background. It should include information about puberty and reproduction, abstinence, contraception and condoms, relationships, sexual violence prevention, body image, gender identity and sexual orientation. Planned Parenthood believes that parents play a critical and central role in providing sex education.

With sex education, we have a golden opportunity to create a culture shift–tackling the misinformation, shame, and stigma that create the basis for many of today’s sexual and reproductive health and rights issues, like:

Reproductive justice

LGBTQ equality

Sexual violence prevention

Gender equity

Dismantling white supremacy

At the root of each of the issues above (among the many more that exist) is a need to teach people about them in an appropriate, unbiased, and accurate way–presenting young people, early on, with the evidence, not the ideologies.

Around 80% of the Philippine population identifies as Roman Catholic. Accordingly, the Catholic Church largely influences the state of sex education in the country. The Catholic Church opposes sex outside of marriage and fears sex education will increase sexual relations. The Catholic Church consequently remains critical of the RH Act, increasing difficulties in putting the RH Act into concrete action.

Additionally, the Catholic Church opposes implementing sex education in schools as well as the distribution of contraceptives. The Church prefers to rely on parents to teach their kids about reproductive health. However, many families are either unequipped to do so or will not address the subject directly with their children.
