Both sides of my family had it tough in Sweden and Ireland. In Sweden, the production of food was rapidly decreasing. Staying in a hostile situation like that could've resulted in starvation. My mother's side moved from Ireland because of the famine. This famine diminished almost all of the crops resulting in a population that was decreasing as well. America offered so much more. Certainly taking a trip like that has its mental challenges. My family also wasn't the wealthiest. While paying for a trip back then isn't even comparable in price to nowadays, the thought of starting new with a minimal amount of money can be difficult. The cultural difference would've definitely been a factor played into this move as well. This emotionally drained areas of the country. Current president Theodore Roosevelt signed the "Pure Food and Drug Act". This prohibited the sale of misbranded or adulterated food and drugs in interstate commerce.
