He also mentions the man having a long beard, dressed in gold and green, and having arrived in Camelot with no weapons other than a bough of holly and an ax. The character of the Green Knight is similar to that of Holly King found in paganism.

The game that the green knight announces to the people of Camelot is a christian game.

"And so all I ask of this court is a Christmas game, For the yule is here, and New Year's, and here sit young men: If any man holds himself, here in this house, so hardly, so bold in his blood-and so brainless in his head- that he dares so stoutly exchange one stroke for another..."

The green knight mentions Christmas which implies the christian tradition of celebrating Jesus Christ on his birth.

The idea of waiting a year and a day is significant in Pagan traditions. This waiting period can also be in other stories such as Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales.
