Star ducks is a story of a famous reporter, Mr. Ward Rafferty of ' THE TIMES ' who was searching for the greatest story in the history. One day he received a call saying a plane had crashed in the ' Alsop ' place . He rushed there and after hearing the information from Mr. Alsop that the airplane had no wings and it was in their barn , Mr. Rafferty was eager to see it. After inspecting the object he identified that it was actually a spaceship. When he learned that the owners of the spaceship are seated in the living room , he rushed there and learnt that his suspicion of the visitors being aliens was true. At first he was startled to see them . He also got to know that the only way to communicate with them was to look in their eye and what they are thinking would be shown to us in the form of a picture. For a moment he thought would be the biggest story of his life , in a hurry he asked Mr. Alsop to get his camera but he did not have one. Unfortunately it was time for the visitors to leave and only Mr. Rafferty could do was to watch the aliens leave to outer space in their spaceship. Before leaving , Mr. Rafferty asked Mr. Alsop the reason for the aliens arrival , and Mr. Alsop said the wanted to grow eggs of the chicken and in return they gave star ducks . Only two of the star ducks which had hatched lived and the Alsops' had eaten the creature for Thanksgiving and also told they had given the bones to their dog . He also mentioned that the dog died 5 years ago and its bones were buried . Ward Rafferty had no other choice but to leave in disappointment that the greatest story of the history is still hidden.
ERIN MARY PRAMOD
8-A.

Once Mr.Rafferty reached Mr.Alsop's house he introduced himself as a reporter from The Times and questioned mr.alsop about the plane crash but Mr.Alsop said no. The same happened with Mrs.Alsop .
After that Mrs.Alsop said that a plane without wings had crashed down their barn and then Mr.Alsop took Mr.Rafferty to the barn and showed him the crashed plane after examining it they came to know that it was a space ship and then they went to the house where the guests from the space ship were sitting with Mrs.alsop who were actually aliens.
After some conservatio, mr.rafferty their names but they did not know their names because they do not talk by saying something they point their antennas towards us and whatever they think we also think the same thing.
After a few questioning and answering with the aliens, mr Rafferty wanted to take some pictures of them and wanted a phone as well but by the times mr.alsop could get the camera the aliens had gone with their spaceship.
Mr.rafferty was really sad when he asked if the aliens and left something behind . They replied that the aliens had come take the eggs from us six years ago but the eggs had spoiled in return they had gave us eggs from their planet.
Mr.rafferty then asked where were the eggs from their planet, they replied that they had kept the eggs under their hen and when the eggs hatched a weird kind of animals had come out who looked half like a hippo and half like a swallow and had named them star ducks. They had ate them for thanksgiving and their bones were given to a dog who must have died years ago.
That meant that there was no sign left about that they the aliens had come.
Later mr.rafferty left mr.alsop house very sadly because he had lost his biggest headline for the tomorrow newspaper.

The story 'Star Ducks' revolves around a reporter named Rafferty from 'The Times'. The story begins when he gets a call from someone saying an airplane came down in the Alsops' field. Rafferty decided to visit them thinking he might get a good scoop for an article. When he arrived at the Alsop's house and asked whether they saw such a thing they denied at first. Suddenly Mrs. Alsop remembered that a 'wingless airplane' did land in their field. Mr. and Mrs. Alsop took Rafferty to see it in their barn. Mr. Rafferty thought that the contraption look liked a globular, giant plastic balloon and was very unusual. Then Mr.Alsop took him to see the folk that built the ship. Mr.Alsop explained that they came to the farm for the first time six years ago because they wanted some eggs. When Rafferty saw the folk he was astonished. They were waving their long flexible antennae, and had pale blue expressionless faces and their eyes seemed like they were painted on. Mrs.Alsop helped Rafferty communicate with them and he was sure that they were aliens. Rafferty was very excited and eager as he finally found something worthy of a headline but was soon dissapointed to know that the Alsop's had no form of communication or a working camera for proof and the aliens were leaving but Rafferty kept on trying to find something to prove his new discovery for his article and asked for anything that the aliens must have left behind. Mr Alsop and Mrs.Alsop were naive people and had nothing to offer because they didn't realize that their 'friends' were aliens so he had to leave with disheartened with a regretful heart instead of a new headline.

Tanya Rajesh

The lesson 'The Star Ducks' by Bill Brown is about Ward Rafferty, a reporter of The Times. He is in search of the biggest story in history to gain fame. He goes to Alsop Place after he receives a phone call regading a plane crash over there. Mr. and Mrs. Alsop deny this at first then says that a plane came but did not crash. Mr. Alsop took Rafferty to the barn to show him the plane, which was a spaceship. Rafferty suspects Mr. Alsop of building it. Mr. Alsop explains that the folk in the plane came six years ago for some eggs to raise chickens from where they came from. It took them three years to get home but by that time the eggs had spoiled so they came back again. Mr. Alsop tells that he built them a brooder to carry the eggs back this time. Rafferty sees the folks and is shocked to discover that they are aliens. He speaks to them but does not receive much information. He asks Mr. Alsop for a camera and Mr. Alsop goes in search of film for it. But by that time the aliens had left. Rafferty later finds out from Mr. Alsop that the folk from space had given some of their own eggs in return for chicken eggs when they had come six years ago. These eggs were star shaped so the Alsops named them Star Ducks. These Star Ducks were funny creatures and only two of them survived. They were eaten by the Alsops for Thanksgiving and the bones were given to the dog who also died. Rafferty goes back in disappointment.

Hence, sci-fi movies color the perceptions of alien life.

Q1. Do you think sci-fi movies have coloured our perception of aliens?
Yes, I do believe that sci-fi movies have coloured our perception of aliencontact. They have influenced our view of aliens in both positive and negative ways. Due to this, when we think of aliens, the thing that immediately springs to our mind is the way aliens are portrayed in the movies. Also, in few movies, they are shown as the antagonist of the plot.

DO YOU THINK SCI-FI MOVIES HAVE COLOURED OUR PERCEPTION OF ALIENS
ANS- Although science fiction deals with imaginative concepts with advanced science and technology and also are almost always exaggerated, they have definitely coloured our perspective of aliens or rather extraterrestrials. The reason that we all imagine aliens so similarly (with large heads, beady eyes, antennae etc.) is because of how aliens are presented in sci-fi movies. Aliens also have similar human/animal features as most science fiction movies and stories are related to the relationship between aliens and the human race.
