In Lord of the Flies selfishness is represented by Jacks tribe since once he made his own group/tribe he made sure he got what he needed, things such as clothes and food. Ralph's tribe represents selflessness because he and the people in his tribe lookout for each other. Sam for example, when looking for food makes sure he gathers up for the "littluns" first.

The conch represents planning and strategy vs. spontaneity. Initially the conch shows the planning and strategy , because Ralph is able to control and give the boys commands and orders. They are also able to make plans when they have the boys circled up, example the signal fire in the beginning. Later the conch starts to represent spontaneity as it is destroyed and all planning and order is lost. The order is lost and the savage and uncivilized personalities of the boys come out.
-CW
