I predict by the summary of the novel, The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen will be about historical fiction. In that way the historical part is when Hannah transports back into the past where the holocaust takes place and learns about how they were treated. Though in the fiction part of the novel, obviously the transportation back into the past would be considered as that.

After they took them into a boxcar and drove them somewhere. Then were split into men and women, had to undress. They showered and got all of their hair cut off. My reaction of this chapter was surprised when they cut the girls hair. They did that so they don't get lice. Another thing that surprised me is that they got a prisoner to cut their hair. I wonder why they didn't get a Nazi or a actual barber to cut their hair.

When they arrived there Nazi soldiers were waiting for them .They forced them into relocation. After finally agreeing to do the relocation, they made the journey through a boxcar that was feces infested and disgusting. When they finally made it to there encampment they were forced to give up there valuables and were forced into the showers where they would be cleaned and then shaved of all hair. I honestly when reading this was shocked. I never thought that happened even though I knew the cruelty that was inflicted upon people in that time period. I think that never should have happen and what they did is awful. I'm curious to see what other awful things happen to Hannah

(Summary)
In The Devil's Arithmetic Hannah and the other Jewish prisoners in the box car for 4 days and 4 nights. In the process they had to rest stops and people keep dying. When they finally stop and get out they are forced in to a building. In the building a non Jew prisoner is in a dress and tells them to learn the word Schnell. Schnell means fast. In the building they have to strip down in front of each other to take a shower. Two Nazi guards move them into the showers the women cover themselves with there arms and hair. My reaction to all of this is that it is weird. Trains are fast the fact that it took 4 days and 4 nights is very astonishing. When in the building I would think that since they have to take off there cloths in front of each other that the women and children were together and the men men and boys would be together. After the shower they were shaved bald what is that got to do with anything. When getting there tattoos on there arms the guard talks to Hannah calmly and tells her that her daughters name is Chya too. When getting the tattoo she forces herself not to cry in front of the kids and does not worry about the pain of the needles.

Hannah is at Shmuel and Fayge's wedding when Nazi soldiers came in on a rampage and forced the villagers into trucks. From the trucks, the villagers and Hannah rode to a train station out in Russia. They were then loaded into boxcars with barely enough room for everyone. Only two stops were made throughout four days of travel. Many people died because they could not handle the compacted area. They arrived at their final destination in a concentration camp. This where Hannah and the others undressed, showered, shaved their heads, and got a tattoo. The tattoo marked them as prisoners. I personally feel horrible for the way they were treated. I had an eerie feeling inside when they were all shoved into the boxcar with nothing to eat and no where to use the restroom. This feeling frightened me for what would happen to them next at the camp. I'm also curious to see what will happen next, though.

Another one is when Hannah thought she was going to die by them spraying gas, but actually sprayed water.
