  • How are the grandfather and the boy similar to each other? How are they different from each other?
  • How are you and your grandparents (or older people you know well) similar to or different from each other?
  • This book teaches that drawing with each other can be a way to get close to each other. What other things do people do together that brings them closer together?
  • What do you see? Think? Wonder?
ACTIVITY:
  • Pass out blank papers.
    • Fold paper in half.
    • Pick one side and draw a picture.
    • Now find a classmate sitting at a different table than you and trade papers.
    • Draw a picture on the blank half of the paper that adds to your partner's drawing.
    • Get back together with your partner and talk about your pictures together.
    • Students can either sit next to each other or apart from each other. Apart is fun so they don't see what their partner is drawing!
    • After drawing, give partnerships time to discuss their process! What do they notice about the final product? 
  • Prompt students to find a partner sitting across the room.
    • Brainstorm a list of things to do together that could help you find common ground, without using words!
    • Pick one of those ideas and do it.
