It gives students a clear idea as to what learning should be like, and hence provides direction but at the same time, values the process of learning. Hattie poignantly highlights how both students and teachers alike see success as what we achieve (valuing the product) - which isn't exactly wrong! However, with LISC, we are indicating to students what they are supposed to learn, rather than what they are supposed to do. This places more emphasis and value on the process of learning. I think this is crucial because it is often something we can forget as we rush through the hustle and bustle of school.

Social Studies is really about learning how society functions and understanding your place in the world. By learning about History, we understand about how humankind has come to be, and this can create a roadmap for us to live our present. Both humanities subjects are crucial in helping learners develop an understanding of the human condition (i.e. what does it mean to be human) and I think they develop empathy and compassion in learners as well. Most important, such subjects help develop critical thought in learners. With regards to skills we learn in both subjects - Source Based Skills are lifelong, thinking frameworks which can help learners make sense of information, evaluate sources and determine what is truth. I think such skill sets are even more crucial in an age where we are constantly bombarded by information.
